AFTER SPENDING NEARLY two decades of his life in prison for a murder conviction that was twice overturned, Rubin โHurricaneโ Carter has died aged 76.
Carter died in his sleep at home in Toronto this morning according to his long time friend John Artis.
The former boxer was battling prostate cancer.
Carter earned the nickname โHurricaneโ thanks to his powerful punches and quick combinations and was ranked number 10 in the world by The Ring Magazine in 1963.
However, he and Artis were convicted of murdering three people in a bar in New Jersey in 1966, spending nine years in jail before the convictions were overturned.
However, both were found guilty for a second time in 1976 and spent another decade in prison before a federal judge overturned the second conviction in 1985.
Carterโs struggles were highlighted by Bob Dylanโs famous song as well as a Hollywood film and a number of books.
Very sad. R.I.P
Ignore the obvious repedative troll
Exactly les. Brendan congratulations on becoming a first class idiot. I bet u wouldnโt say it to his face. Coward
Perhaps Brendan you are referring to the widespread online rumour that he admitted his guilt and Bob Dylan said heโd never play Hurricane again as a result?
If so, it is a baseless internet rumour. Thatโs all.
Cop on you clown
Can you not read, TWICE overturned ???
He was found guilty twice, A jury never found him not guilty. Thereโs a big difference between that and a judgement being overturned on some fairness issue.
Toolbag!!
I wasnโt overturned!!!
That is true.
And with all the evidence against him, he was guilty. He did it. The only research most people look to is the movie, which is largely fictional and full of false information (a number of people defamed in the film sued, and won, over stuff that was presented in that film as truth, when it was lies). The guy was no hero, he was a bully, and he threw up the racism card when people challenged him. The leading lie is that it was overturned, but the what actually happened was that the state decided not to retry the case, because it was too expensive, and a number of witnesses were now dead.
In the second trial, the jury selected were done so on the basis that they were not in the least bit prejudiced, and any prejudice displayed meant they were not allowed on the jury. And he was still convicted. The guy was a monster, at times, and the story below, which I have provided a link to, details one occassion, when he was out on bail, where he beat a woman unconscious. This was in 1975, before his second trial. If the guy could beat a defenseless woman unconscious, where he left her needing to spend a month in hospital (and this was not the first time he had done so, the guy served a couple of prison terms before his conviction for murder, a few for beating folks unconcious) then the chances of him killing people is beyond all doubt. Also, this is when Dylan stopped singing The Hurricane song, as this story made front page headlines back in the day, so his celebrity friends stopped supporting him.
Also, unlike the movie, where he is seen coming home as a hero whilst serving in the army, in truth, the guy was kicked out of the army due to many misconduct issues.
There is so much out there to disprove everything about this guy, who was no victim. He served 19 years in prison, and rightfully so. Because all evidence points to him doing it.

In spite of its black sounding name that site is hosted by the same people as this site, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormfront_(website) .
Iโm going to go out on a limb here and say that if a bunch of racists, Neo-Nazis, and KKK members tell you that a black man is guilty of something theyโre saying it because theyโre racist and heโs black.
They have some delightful stuff about Jews on there too, i would stab a guess that a lot of it is made up too.
Sadly, the Carter stuff is real and well documented.

RIP
At least he went in his sleep. He suffered enough throughout his life.
Mr Carter was Twice convicted of murder by 2 different jurys. Also Beat a woman unconscious that was raising money for his re-trial.
Itโs all Bob Dylanโs fault for writing that biased song.
Also Lied about his alibi. 4 people testified at the second trial that he asked them to lie for him. The โall whiteโ jury had 1 Black man the first time and 2 Black men the second time. The defence used up all 12 of their juror challenges. Prosecuters only used 8.
Was also unlikely to challenge again for world title. Lost 5/9 fights following losing his last title fight.
He nearly killed that poor woman that was defending him.He might have been the victim of a racist justice system but lets not put the man on a pedestal if your only knowledge of him is the movie & Bob Dylan song.
Thought it turned out he did do it? And that was why Dylan stopped playing that song?
I canโt be bother googling itโฆ
I think he did admit it in the end.
Yes, the article is wrong. Carter did do it and consequently lost all support from the Hollywood crowd who were championing his cause.
Great song by Dylan though. Apparently heโs gets very tetchy if an interviewer brings it up.
No he didnโt admit it. It was an internet rumour folks. Thatโs all. I heard it too and believed it. Itโs not so. He did not admit guilt.
The song goes on for nearly 2 decades.
Good movie but a few doubts on its complete authenticity.
I think thereโs a bit of ambiguity regarding his case but I suppose you have to give the man the benefit of the doubt. Couldnโt understand anything Bob Dylan was saying but โHurricaneโ was a great song.
Before shedding a tear, read about the hurricane true story including the beating of a woman who helped him
Oh, Lord, people.. Carter was actually hiding in the back seat of the car, when he was arrested.. The same car 2 different people IDed as the car that sped away from the murder scene, with 3 black people in it.. John Artisโ relative lived just 2 blocks away, which is where they dumped the weapons..
Rubin Carter was a POS triple murderer, period..
No jacob. They wrote a song about him. Institutional racism keeping a champ in jail. RIP big man.
Ya fecking chipstickโฆ He was guilty!!
All the evidence currently points to that he did do it. Donโt mourn the Hurricane. Mourn his victims. Heโs the original OJ Simpson.
R.I.P Hurricane.
โfedral judgeโ? So did you mean feral or federal? It is getting as bad as the Indo around here. The Indo valued Google 500m. the other day. 500 billion it should have been.
Cโmon. Nothing is as bad as the Indo. Especially on weekends.
Also, use the โsend tip/correctionโ button rather than coming on here and commenting and looking for attention for being the brightest boy in class, able to spot a typo.
Your correct it was a typo, the judge was in fact ferrel
I believe that Bob Dylan later disowned the song and now refuses to sing it as he has changed his mind on the case and now believes Rubin Carter to be guilty of the murders
Canโt stop singin that song now, maybe itโs the wine! Rip
Im on the wine too, Buckfast tonic wine.
It gets you f*cked fast, does Buckfast
Living up to the loyalist stereotype, Jamesy?
Iโm sorry, itโs too obvious not to point out.
Guilty as sin, a nasty thug

Poor fella! Sleep well champ R.I.P
Did you read any of the above posts?
Great man. Great boxer. Great injustice.
He was a terrible boxerโฆand he got his butt handed to him on manyโs an occassion.
What a Legand
Very sad โ
R.I.P HURRICANE!!!
Great man. Great story. Goodbye Rubin.
May he rest in peace.
What about the people he murdered?
Thereโs plenty of evidence to suggest he was heavily involved as people have said. Many people portrayed in the film have successfully sued because of incorrect portrayal including the Italian who he beat well in real life but was made out to be a fix against Carter. Whatever he did or didnโt do he deserves to R.I.P
So if he murdered 3 people he deserves to RIP? Weird view of reality.
Actually, the Italian pummelled Carter in the fight, and he sued the makers of the film, and got alot of money too, because they alleged the fight was one by Carter, when in fact he was badly beaten in the fight, and had a major loss.
Straight to heaven,rip
What a man what a loss RIP
RIP Hurricane. What potential, what a tragic waste of talent, what happened to him.
R.I.P hurricane carter
He was destined to be one of the greatest middleweights of all time.
27 wins, 12 losses and 1 drawโฆ..donโt think so.
R.I.Pโฆ.YOU SUFFERED ENOUGH IN THIS LIFE BOTH BY THE SYSTEM AND THE ILLNESS ..PEACE NOW TO YOU โฆ.<3
He was almost certainly a violent thug and murderer.
Rip
RIP Hurricane
As Chuck D says,Donโt believe the hype!!!The man was a killer and a shit boxer.
