DO YOU FEEL short-changed, Gaelic games fans?

Dublin GAA’s chief executive says today that those of us with an interest in hurling and football are being sold short by the state broadcaster.

In his report to the Dublin county convention, John Costello says the fact that RTÉ doesn’t broadcast any live GAA games between September and May does a disservice to supporters.

“The licence fee payers whose primary sporting interests are Gaelic games are being short-changed,” he says.  ”Domestic soccer has the Monday Night Soccer while rugby has Against the Head but what of football and hurling?

“Even the Six One News on Sunday evenings gives scant coverage of football and hurling, just listing results in some willy-nilly fashion without at times informing the viewer whether its football or hurling, quarter-finals, semi- or finals.”

Recently too, former Laois player Colm Parkinson suggested on Newstalk radio that the Sunday Game should be complemented with another magazine-style show, especially on busy championship weekends in the summer.

So what do you think of RTÉ’s Gaelic Games coverage in general and what would you like to see less or more of?

  • Can someone please take GAA coverage off TV3. Matt Cooper doesnt have a notion what he’s talking about when is talking about sport, nevermind GAA!! Good coverage on RTE and replays then on RTE player.

  • There is definitley not enough gaa coverage especially for the weaker counties and the national league. The Sunday Game is more concerned with causing controversy rather than show the action. Whats the point in sending cameras and commentators to all the games and then show a scant 30 seconds of action. A maggazine type show would be a great idea.
As the Premiership in England has proved TV saturation actually leads to increased crowds as it helps promote the game. Gaa’s decision to reduce live games last year was ludacris!!! Especially when your own county may only play once every four weeks come championship time!!

  • its a lot better than domestic soccer or Rugby. but a sports channel on saorview which covers weaker counties and national league games would help. as a league of Ireland fan there is a lot more to do in terms of coverage

  • There’s a GAA club in almost every parish in the country – so I think participation should be encouraged rather than going out of their way to accommodate armchair fans!

I also don’t think it’s fair to analyse and criticise amateur sports people on TV every week.

  • im not a massive gaa fan but the whole summer months are swamped by gaa on rte, tv3, and tg4. during the simmer there are at least 3 live champ matches on tv between the 2 main stations in the country. compare this to the LG of Ireland when there’s a match on once every 3/4 week’s.
