KATIE TAYLOR SAYS her childhood hero Roy Keane is the man to replace Giovanni Trapattoni as Republic of Ireland manager.
The Olympic champion played internationally for Ireland before she gave up her promising soccer career to chase boxing gold.
And though former Celtic and Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill remains the strong bookmakers’ favourite, Taylor thinks the FAI should be looking at Keane.
“Trapattoni did a great job in getting us to the European finals,” Taylor said.
“Maybe he made a few bad decisions in terms of leaving a few players out but what difference would those players have made, really? What world-class players do we have in the team?
“I’d like Roy Keane to get it.
“I haven’t actually met him but he was one of my heroes growing up: him and Sonia O’Sullivan.”
Afraid he’s got the same issue as Glenn Hoddle, can’t accept players that aren’t as good as him drives him cream crackers !!
Niall I don’t know why you bother with stories about Roy Keane , it just brings out all the ABU Muppets !!
Very insightful Katie!!!!!
Giving the job to a gobshitte like him is like putting a loaded gun into the hands of a madman.Tried n tested. No man management skills n has made a balls of most clubs hes been to
Sunderland! !!
As much as I loved Roy Keane in his playing days at both Manchester United and been in the Ireland team I don’t think he’d be a good man for the job. I still reckon he’s too inexperienced for the roll. His managerial career so far is a bit topsy turvy and no club in England seems to want to take a punt on him so why should the FAI.
P.s. He’s a brutal pundit on ITV and says ‘we’ been covering the England games.
You’re thinking of Andy Townsend there buddy. Keane has never called England we.
Keane is one of the better pundits over there.
Andy “I used to be Irish in a past life” Townsend!
In fairness that would’t take much to be honest. But just because he’s the best of a bad bunch that doesn’t make him a great pundit.
Be quiet & shine up your fake Olympic medal Katie!
Martin O’Neill is the ideal option, Keane would be good at making sure the training camp and facilities are up to spec!
I wouldn’t argue with Keano and wouldn’t argue with Katie either
John I’ll think you find he did in the lost qualifiers and in fairness to Andy Townsend he is English.
I think the general point John was making about Townsend, and several players who declared for Ireland during that era, is that they seemed to quickly forget that they played for Ireland. But, as Roy might say, “in all fairness”, I’m being paid by an English TV station to do a job. How many Irish soccer fans of English teams use the royal “we” when referring to their team. I think it is a little different when being a TV pundit on international matches. Don’t ever remember Graham Souness or Dieter Hamann using “we” when referring to Ireland on Irish TV!
Paddy down the street thinks his dog should get the Ireland job, is the journal going to run a story on that. It would have about as much journalistic value as this article. Katie Taylor is not known for her soccer knowledge and experience, would Roy Keane be asked a question about women’s boxing. Come on Journal.ie
Why give it to Keano….Sure he wouldn’t turn up for International Friendlies. !!!
Punch drunk?
