11-year-old Cork boy picked for lead role in Roy Keane film

Liverpool fan Craig Keane Harrington will play a young Roy in ‘Rockmount’.

THE STAR OF the upcoming Roy Keane film has been found.

Back in January, it was announced that the Irish Film Board was to back ‘Rockmount’ — a short fictional film about a young boy named Roy from Cork who is hoping to become a professional footballer.

Around 100 boys auditioned for the lead role over two days last week and 11-year-old Craig Keane Harrington from Ballincollig has been picked to star in the production.

“We’re delighted to announce that Craig Keane Harrington (no relation, but a lucky coincidence) has been cast in the role of Roy for the upcoming Irish Film Board Signatures short film Rockmount,” a statement released today reads.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever cast,” added director Dave Tynan. “Craig just made it too hard not to pick him; he ticked every box.

“All of our kids can play and act so we’re in good shape. I’m delighted not only with Craig but all of our cast; every single speaking role is a Cork native and that’s the right way to do it. We’ve got a film to make now but this cast gives us the best possible chance to make it work.”

Craig’s dad Chris could hardly contain his excitement while speaking to Joe Harrington on Cork’s Red FM: “We really are delighted for Craig to be playing Roy Keane the legend.

“It was an honour to get as far as he did but to be told that Craig had got the part is unbelievable.”

A big Liverpool fan, Craig’s favourite player is not the ex-Man United midfielder but Reds striker Daniel Sturridge.

Shooting will take place in Cork, including at Rockmount Football Club, over the next couple of weeks and the film is set to premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in July.
