FORMER MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Roy Keane says some of the club’s players ‘should be ashamed of themselves’ for their role in today’s sacking of David Moyes.

Keane, on commentary duty for ITV ahead of the Champions League semi final between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, lambasted the United players and chief executive Ed Woodward for Moyes’ departure after only 10 months at the helm.

Keane said United should have given the former Everton boss more time. Asked to out the reasons for Moyes’ sacking into a few words, the Irish assistant coach responded, “That’s difficult.” He continued, “It was a hard start. Last summer, when he took the job, I think the chief executive didn’t get the deals done that he wanted; a lot of negativity, slow start and he had no momentum.

It think it’s a shame and think he should have been given more time. I think some of the players and Manchester United should be ashamed of themselves. I think they really let him down.”

Keane said he ‘wouldn’t necessarily’ say Moyes was former manager Alex Ferguson’s choice as a successor. “He put his name forward but obviously the club, at the end of the day, had to make the decision. You obviously can’t be critical of Alex Ferguson.”

He added that Moyes did not have the support of the players, who must take their share of the responsibility for the Scot’s premature sacking. “I think he deserved more time, definitely.”
