Rory McIlroy drops to third in world rankings after latest missed cut at Muirfield

Phil Mikelson takes second spot after his stunning Open victory.

PHIL MICKELSON HAS moved up to second in the PGA World Rankings after his success at the British Open on yesterday.

The American, whose final-day charge at Muirfield saw him secure his fifth major title, jumps three places, just behind compatriot Tiger Woods, who finished in a three-way tie for sixth in Scotland.

Rory McIlroy drops one place to third after missing the cut at the British Open, while US Open champion Justin Rose falls to fifth with Australia’s Adam Scott in fourth.

England’s Lee Westwood is still waiting to secure his first major title after a disastrous final round at Muirfield, but he can take some comfort after moving back into the top 10. Ian Poulter, who finished tied third with compatriot Westwood, moves up six spots to 14.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson clinched his best-ever finish at a major by sealing second place behind Mickelson, and has surged up 10 places to number 20 as a result. Hideki Matsuyama is another big mover, rising 10 places to 34, while Argentina’s Angel Cabrera is into the top 50 after finishing tied for 11th in Scotland.

Miguel Angel Jimenez could not deliver on his early promise at golf’s oldest major, slipping to five over par after heading into the final two rounds at three under. However, the Spaniard’s 13th-place finish has still lifted him 16 places to number 73.

Graeme McDowell is in eighth, Pádraig Harrington is in 75th and Shane Lowry lies in 81st after his weekend in East Lothian.
