RORY MCILROY WON his second straight major championship and fourth of his young career, rallying on the back nine in the PGA Championship.
The tournament finished in near-darkness Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club, with the final two groups essentially morphing into a foursome as they raced to beat nightfall. A nearly two-hour rain delay set up the possibility of a Monday finish, especially if there had been a three-hole playoff.
McIlroy took care of that by shooting 3-under 68, beating Phil Mickelson by one stroke. McIlroy rallied from a three-shot deficit at the turn, setting up an eagle at the 10th with a brilliant second shot. He built a two-stroke lead with a 10-foot birdie putt at the 17th.
McIlroy finished at 16-under 268. Here’s the winning putt:

Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson tied for third, two shots behind.
Before McIlroy thanked Fowler and Mickelson for their sportsmanship on the last hole, the Holywood native managed to save the top of the Wanamaker.

Anyway, Graham, I was glued to the screen all evening – absolutely delighted for McIlroy! He really had to dig deep and fight – he was lucky, too! Since he declared for Ireland, everything is back on track!
It was how he won is what impressed most. Delayed all day, players making birdies all around him on front 9… but he stayed focused!!
That was one of best Major championship wins I’ve ever seen. Brilliant viewing.
Disappointed that there was no coverage from the score throughout the final day. Not a peep. An Irishman winning a major gets less coverage than some boxing promoter having a sex change… Sporting priorities?
To be fair, Joe, the Score.ie, just like journal.ie, is an online source, taking affiliated stories from the press as an aggregator, with some in-house pieces. This isn’t ESPN, BBC or CNN. There are no live reporters on the ground. They use social media and cover sport, just like you or I, mostly from the armchair. I guess no one wanted the PGA short straw to stay up late tonight and cover it. The popularity and traffic comes in the comments, not always the coverage.
Absolutely Mick you make a valid point. But in comparison to some of the fluff pieces and some of the more obscure and less popular sports that are covered live, to not have one of the 4 majors in a sport where home grown players are successful in on the world stage (and won in a thrilling manner tonight) covered is a bit odd.
It doesn’t have to be a live shot by shot coverage like the BBC or sky but at least the odd up date over the past 7 hours may have been useful to some and got a conversation going. I reckon it would have got more comments than the grand total of 2 from the live as it happens coverage of the minor hurling semi final today! Of course other websites do a detailed coverages but I use the score for an Irish perspective and to see the comments from home viewers.
Online I mean, was of course live on Sky Sports 4, a satellite channel from his UK home so anyone with sky sports could watch it or you could follow on bbc website, Guardian website etc
It’s not really as Golf is a 32 county All-Ireland association & sport so he’s a product of the Irish “GUI system” – prob win UK And Irish sports personality of year awards ;-)
Ah come on now lads. Yis are getting as bad as the Brits who regularly claim successful Republican Irish Sportsmen as being British. Rory is from Northern Ireland which is under British rule. He pays tax to the Queen. He might try to be polite and play the Irish card but he is from Britain.
Whether he is British, Irish or N. Irish (who cares?) i doubt he pays taxes to the Queen. He lives in Florida ..and Rory McIlroy Inc. is registered in Dublin where there is quite an advantageous tax dodge for sports people, musicians, artists and the like
He used to be registered in Dublin with Horizon Sports Management who are based in Dublin but have a registered address in Malta but he is currently taking Horizon to court and severed his contract with them. He has gone it alone now and employed several members of his family to look after his affairs now who all live in Northern Ireland. Rory himself has relocated to the U.S but has to spend a minimum of 183 days over the course of 3 years to avail of there tax system. Rory also has a registered address in Monaco and Portrush in the U.K So I don’t think anyone knows where he’s paying tax at the moment. Also why has Bono and U2 moved there tax affairs out of Dublin if its so advantageous?
Couldent agree, He was born on the island of Ireland & therefore he is irish, He has a lot to be thankful for to the irish pga, I have to say he is a world class golfer & if he wants to call himself british that’s up to him but he was born in ireand, The brits have this habit of claiming sports people like him because they are world class, just like they call Britain the mainland? its still an island like ireland
Dont know why all the red thumbs.like in the states a rain delay might be just a shower(have seen like on the euro tour golfers like playing in like storms with no delay. But in fairness the rain in croke park today was just apocalyptic…..just a pure out an out deluge. At time u would loose the ball inda air amd then seeing supporters(including meself)shaking to death with the rain and cold but stickin it out to cheer their countys on.Proud to be irish and a member of the gaa looking at that
No one is knocking GAA Emma – was great match today. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut it has feck all to do with the Golf – can’t play when there are puddles on the Greens..
Yeah I was just thinking was it cold in croke park today while I was watching a golf tournament in America. As Mcilroy drove on the 18th I thought Jesus it was lashing in Tullamore today.
Excellent golf..great TV..delighted Rory won and not Mickelson…could never forgive him for saying Irish women aren’t good looking when playing in the Walker cup in the early 90s..his ball ended up in the crowd and then he made his silly remark.
He’s actually from a place called Northern Ireland. That’s his Northern Ireland accent. It’s a place most people from the Republic, or Britain, don’t generally want to know about until it produces a world-class sportsman. Then it’s all backslapping and we’re the best people ever. Funny that.
Brilliant Rory, it is your time now . There will be a time when another great will challenge , thats the way life goes , but let’s enjoy your amazing achievements now. He was born in Northern Ireland because of the British and Irish politicians agreeing to separate the island over 90 yrs ago …and that’s just an historical fact …
You do know that he hit the lowest score ever to win the US Open. And that was 3 years ago when he was 22. Maybe Tiger was lucky Rory wasn’t around 10-15 years ago.
Absolutely compulsive viewing, definitely one of the best majors I can ever remember. The PGA is normally the poor relation of the four majors with the Masters and British Open taking all of the plaudits, however the PGA can hold their head high after what was a superb tournament, with one of the great finishes ever in a Major. Fair play to McIlroy, he showed guts, determination and no amount of skill to win that, although I have to say that I felt sorry for Phil Mickelson, one of the true gents in golf, and arguably the greatest short game bar none. Well done Rory, you are truly the greatest Irish golfer ever at the tender age of 25.
Great play from Rory, the two holes that impressed me the most, the tenth of course for the eagle, but the 13th told a lot about the other two, Fowler and Mickelson, they both played safe into the island green, avoiding the water, and only got pars, McElroy went straight for the pin and got his birdie.

2nd straight major for Rory Mcilroy.
What a phenomenal advertisement against marriage.
Yeah, so true, the things that can be achieved by dumping someone just as the invites go out…..
Excellent, Eddie – gays, be warned!
I bet most will think the above post is anti-gay – well, it isn’t.
Homophob!!
I’m so funny!
Look at those instant disagrees…. Guess your friends are on :)
I thought gays had humour too….. At least thats what I thought after Will and Grace.
There is also a thread about millimetres from a hole in one…… Seems to be the topic now….. :)
Anyway, Graham, I was glued to the screen all evening – absolutely delighted for McIlroy! He really had to dig deep and fight – he was lucky, too! Since he declared for Ireland, everything is back on track!
Look, I don’t think they’re gay activists, Graham, I think they’re just English.
I’m drinking Labatt’s blue, relaxing, what’s all this gay talk??? :)
Balls, drivers, fairways and wedges can confuse a lot people.
Labatt’s Blue. The Horror… the horror.
Cringe
Please remove all this homophobic stuff you are deeply offensive
Jesus nike are kitting him out in some atrocious looking gear these days
they’re sayin people who drink Labatt’s blue are gay, but that’s ridiculous….
Big hats seem to be the thing. All it needs is a flashing blue Nike Light on top
Comment of the day Eddie, brilliant.
I will agree, drinking a blue in Ireland is horrible….. Not right….. But here in Canada, glorious….
Yea Ted, thats ridiculous. Your thinking of Molson…..
That was brilliant viewing. Congratulations Rory, phenomenal achievement.
That is now 9 majors for this wonderful little Island since 2007.Unbelievable record.
9 majors from team Ireland! That’d be equivalent to Great Britain winning 90
Yea and six from North. What the hell’s wrong with you clodhoppers down south?
Padraig will be back. He just needs a new bubble for his spirit level
What a player
It was how he won is what impressed most. Delayed all day, players making birdies all around him on front 9… but he stayed focused!!
That was one of best Major championship wins I’ve ever seen. Brilliant viewing.
Disappointed that there was no coverage from the score throughout the final day. Not a peep. An Irishman winning a major gets less coverage than some boxing promoter having a sex change… Sporting priorities?

There are apps to follow the tournament in depth. It’s not hard to do .
Absolutely Mick you make a valid point. Of course other websites do a detailed coverages but I use the score for an Irish perspective and to see the comments from home viewers.
It was covered in depth by his national broadcaster the BBC. At this rate there could be a Sir Rory McIlroy playing for Ireland at the next Olympics.
Online I mean, was of course live on Sky Sports 4, a satellite channel from his UK home so anyone with sky sports could watch it or you could follow on bbc website, Guardian website etc
Yea, pity he’s not from the Republic
It’s not really as Golf is a 32 county All-Ireland association & sport so he’s a product of the Irish “GUI system” – prob win UK And Irish sports personality of year awards ;-)

@mick
http://www.rorymcilroyinc.com/
In fairness we’re pretty good at claiming people to be Irish as well under pretty dubious grounds most of the time.
Congrats rory. Many more major sundays to come from rory and rickie fowler
What a performance! He is going to be a legend of the game.. Hats off to him.!
Well done … Tri colour flying high tonight
Another Major success,
Congrats Rory.
He really is a class act. Brilliant performance
Pity he pig ugly
He’s only a class act at golf, the rest of him ain’t all dat…
you’re the ugly one
Let’s see your mug? Stop hiding behind an egg
He’d get more fanny than any of you naysayers put together
Super display by Rory, nerves of steel.
Savage stuff from Rory, wasn’t even at his best but still was good enough to win
Was at his best on the back nine
Fowler, Henson and Phil played some great golf and made this one best final days I can remember.
Hard to believe that a 41 year old legend like Mickleson has only won 1 more Major than a 25 year old Rory.
Insane
Henson is a master puppeteer alright, birdies, eagles be can pull them all off
Mickelson is 44 by the way and I still don’t see where the “insanity” is with him winning one more major than someone who is 25
Ha yes, meant Stenson. It is late in my defence..
Love that muppet gag…. Comment of the week….
A great day for ireland well done boy .
A rain delay! They should watch the limerick/ Kilkenny hurling from today and toughen up.
Ya they should watch the UFC and just batter the sh!te outa each other while they’re at it
Are you available for punditry, great insight on golf, you should capitalise on that.
Ye they could of played while putting through near lakes
Ehm…..well,sorry i said anything then
Yeah I was just thinking was it cold in croke park today while I was watching a golf tournament in America. As Mcilroy drove on the 18th I thought Jesus it was lashing in Tullamore today.
That back 9 is some of the best golf I can remember. Utterly superb and brilliant. What can stop him
In mcilroy i did trust and he did it delighted for him only 25 and 4 majors may there be many more to come:):)
Yep ..16 before he’s a 100 ;-)
He’d be on 6 or 7 majors if it wasn’t for the wiznacki one
Fantastic golf and not one doctor floored throughout!!
Excellent golf..great TV..delighted Rory won and not Mickelson…could never forgive him for saying Irish women aren’t good looking when playing in the Walker cup in the early 90s..his ball ended up in the crowd and then he made his silly remark.
Well he has a point.
he did clear that one up and in fairness, if he didn’t he was spot on
5/1 odds to win. Damn…
Congrats Rory,what a year!!
But,what’s story with his accent?! He sounds more lik yank now!!
He’s actually from a place called Northern Ireland. That’s his Northern Ireland accent. It’s a place most people from the Republic, or Britain, don’t generally want to know about until it produces a world-class sportsman. Then it’s all backslapping and we’re the best people ever. Funny that.

Real dog fight, went for every shot, rock on Rory.lots more to come.
They say behind every great man is a great woman..Not for Rory!
Since he got rid of that Novak one hes on fire!
great advertisement for staying single and getting rid of those annoying embarassing selfies that the gf enjoyed posting….well done rory
Only reason he’s winning is because Tiger isn’t fit. Harrington did the same. He’d be slaughtered if he was head to head with the great Tiger Woods.
You do know that he hit the lowest score ever to win the US Open. And that was 3 years ago when he was 22. Maybe Tiger was lucky Rory wasn’t around 10-15 years ago.

Not fir? Tiger’s clapped out I’m afraid old chum
I know his from the north, but, his N.I. Accent has diminished ALOT!!!
Compared couple years ago
Well done Rory!!!
Great play from Rory, the two holes that impressed me the most, the tenth of course for the eagle, but the 13th told a lot about the other two, Fowler and Mickelson, they both played safe into the island green, avoiding the water, and only got pars, McElroy went straight for the pin and got his birdie.
Well done young man….
