Rory Gallagher could be named Donegal's new manager tonight

Meanwhile, Naomh Conaill have yet to confirm whether or not they will make an appeal over their semi-final loss last week.

RORY GALLAGHER — the favourite to land the vacant Donegal senior team manager’s job — could be ratified tonight as the November county committee was brought forward by three days.

Donegal county board officials last night confirmed that Monday’s scheduled sitting would instead take place tonight in Ballybofey with ratification of Jim McGuinness’s successor high on the list of priorities. Interviews to succeed McGuinness took place last week and Gallagher was one of at least four nominations.

Gallagher is the current joint-manager of Kilcar with John McNulty and was McGuinness’s assistant when Donegal won the 2012 All-Ireland. A native of Belleek, Co Fermanagh, Gallagher lives in Killybegs and expressed his interest in the position of Donegal senior manager a fortnight ago.

It was confirmed by the Donegal County Board they would be keeping all applications ‘confidential’ two weeks ago, therefore it is possible that more than the four names publicised may have been interviewed.

The only other names to make their way into the public forum at their own accord were Fanad Gaels’ nomination — Kilmacud Crokes’ 2009 All-Ireland club championship winning manager Paddy Carr; Naomh Conaill nominee Cathal Corey, who took the club to the 2010 Donegal SFC and Ulster club final, while Anthony Harkin, Donegal’s trainer when they won the All-Ireland in 1992, was Ardara’s choice.

Names will also be put before the clubs of the county for the vacant positions of both minor and U21 managers tonight, with outgoing bosses Declan Bonner and Maxi Curran said to be the frontrunners to continue in their respective roles.

Meanwhile, Naomh Conaill have yet to confirm whether or not they will make an appeal to the Ulster Hearings Committee over their Donegal SFC semi-final loss to Glenswilly on Sunday.

The Glenties-based club went down 0-10 to 0-8 but it was later learned that Glenswilly’s Ciaran Bonner had not been dismissed despite having been both yellow and black carded over the course of the match. Bonner’s replacement Oisin Crawford put his team a point up in injury time on their way to victory.

Naomh Conaill’s ‘objection into the awarding of the game’ was rejected by the Donegal CCC on Wednesday night but an appeal option is open, which can be made within 72 hours of hearing the decision.

Glenswilly meet St Eunan’s of Letterkenny in Sunday’s decider in Ballybofey, with the Donegal champions due to face Roslea Shamrocks from Fermanagh in the Ulster club championship seven days’ later.
