Confirmed: Rory Gallagher leaves Donegal backroom team as McGuinness eyes changes

Jim McGuinness’s right-hand man will not be returning in 2014.

Updated 10.01

RORY GALLAGHER WILL not return as a selector on the Donegal football team next season, it has been confirmed.

Gallagher has been Jim McGuinness’s right-hand man since 2011 and was part of the set-up that ended Donegal’s long wait for Ulster and All-Ireland titles.

The news comes just a few days after Donegal confirmed that McGuinness will stay on for the fourth and final year of his contract.

“CLG Dhún na nGall were informed this morning by Senior Football Team Manager, Jim McGuinness of his intention to make changes in his management and support team,” a statement from the county board reads.

“He subsequently confirmed that Rory Gallagher and Maxi Curran will not be involved in the Donegal management team for the 2014 season. Francie Friel, who was involved in the backroom team, will also not be involved in 2014.”

Pity. He was very well liked and respected in Donegal A bit like Peter Taylor to Jim’s Brian Clough – I wonder how Jim will get on without him.

Was always was a bit of a maverick and a renegade. You saw that in the lead to last years AI QF when he was talking about collusion.

Gallagher is a clown. No loss to Donegal, better off without him.

Wasn’t able to carry the can while the boss was away – you can see that from the dirty looks Jimmy was giving Rory during the Mayo match.

the looks on jimmy and rory during the mayo match was that they didnt give a f#ck. i would safely say that jimmy would also be gone only for he is building a professional career and that farce against mayo wouldnt look great on a cv as his last match in charge

Rory didn’t do his media duties well. Totally screwed up talking about Mayo manager the way he did.

No need for the poor comments folks. He did well in the few years in the set-up. No harm taking in fresh thinking.
