ONE DUBLIN RESIDENT took an unexpected video call on Monday… from US Open champion Rory McIlroy.
When the Holywood star took a lift to the airport from an Irish-born Cape Cod policeman, the pair struck up a rapport.
Irish-born Barney Murphy, of the Barnstable sheriff’s office, gave McIlroy a police escort from a charity appearance at a country club to the city’s Logan Airport.
“He was absolutely a normal guy,’’ Murphy told the Boston Globe. “He asked if he could ride in the cruiser. He said he really liked dogs. You know he’s not going to become anything but a normal guy, because he’s so down to earth.’’
Then, Murphy pulled out his iPad and dialled his sister, Joan Dodd, on Skype back home.
“You’ll never guess who I have with me,’’ Murphy said, before turning the camera from a police dog to McIlroy. “She didn’t know what to say,’’ Murphy laughed.
The journey took 90 minutes and, he says, they passed the time talking about growing up in Ireland and rugby.
