VIDEO: Here is Ronan O’Gara’s appalling brain freeze against Scotland

The Munster outhalf had a shocker as he came on for the misfiring Paddy Jackson.

RONAN O’GARA REPLACED misfiring Irish outhalf Paddy Jackson with 16 minutes to go in his team’s Six Nations clash with Scotland.

Ireland trailed 9-8 when the Munster man entered the field of play but he was soon in the thick of the action.

O’Gara was not the only Irish player to have a shocker but he somehow contrived to make two costly botches – a dodgy crossfield kick/flub and failing to find touch – before Dave Kilcoyne conceded a crucial penalty.

Check out how the play unfolded in what could well be O’Gara’s final game in green:

  • Jesus, what trash. I admit that ROG is past his best — I’ve calling for Madigan to take his place for months now — but this 6Ns has seen a lot of our finest players scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of the quality of their performance and yet no other Irish rugby player has been singled out for an article — WITH A VIDEO CLIP — that focuses exclusively on his error. 128 international caps, more than 1,000 points, not to mention a grand-slam winning drop goal, and he’s gets this sort of spiteful rubbish posted up in thanks…? While we’re at it, how about a compilation of all of Heaslip’s knock-ons in the England game, Best’s mis-throws, and Sexton’s missed goal kicks?
    Joke.

    • O’gara either dosent give a f&ck or had a few bob on Scotland. Either way he has been a joke for the last 3 weeks.
Munster fans can all you want try deflect this mess on to heaslip but that doesn’t change the fact rog is finished.
As for the video clip well I don’t think any who saw the game today would want to watch a clip from it.

    • Agree with BCollins. Very little to like overall but the worst thing was the TOTAL lack of leadership. Appalling!!!

    • Chris I’m not trying to defend ROG or blame it on Heaslip and if that’s what you think I’m doing then you’ve missed the point of my comment completely. The team performed badly today, and badly against England last week too. But no other player’d mistake were singled out for special attention by TheScore. It’s in very poor taste. As another commentator here described it, gutter journalism.

    • Surely the reason this moment has been singled out is because it was one of the craziest things seen at a top level rugby game in ages.

  • Jesus did o Gara cost Ireland the match ?.did he give away the last penalty ? Admittedly he was poor but not the reason Ireland lost

    • No Chris, O’Gara didn’t lose us the match, but he was brought on to try and save it for us, and against a side like Scotland that should have been a given, unfortunately he failed miserably in this task. He was ultimately responsible for the penalty given as a result of his poor cross field kick an inability to find touch after the scramble back. Needing to score a try in the last play of the game when a penalty would have won it for us was what ultimately cost us the game. Although in fairness there probably wasn’t a man in green out there today that could put his hand up and say they had a good game.

    • His attempted pass to Marshall at end of the game was extremely poor.

    • My question is who gave away the stupid penalties ? No leadership on the field anymore

  • Patrick, that is just gutter journalism to single out an individual mistake from a game that was strewn with mistakes. Some others players were far worse over the course of the match. You actually posted a video and wrote about one action by one player who saw 16 minutes of action. Don’t ever try to portray yourself as objective after this.

    • Thanks for the comment. It was hardly an isolated incident (or incidents) from O’Gara. There are 5 other stories on the site that deal with the failings of the other players.

    • Not in your article though. You chose one. It’s fair enough for people leaving comments to exhibit bias. It’s supposed to be different for journalists. Your reply actually proves my point.

    • It’s not bias to point out that O’Gara is performing woefully it’s just a fact. Look he has been a fantastic servant to Irish rugby but ever since his little fit in the world cup his performances have been average to let’s be honest awful in the last 2 games. It’s like watching a punch drunk boxer .

Well said Padraig – pure bloody ignorance if you asked me .

    • Those 2 mistakes in a row were woeful and were probably the deciding factor in a poor performance. He had the chance to right his wrong by making touch and he failed miserably. Schoolboy stuff. The author is well within his rights to point it out.

  • O’ Gara was not great but how one player can be held responsible for another player giving away a penalty is beyond me. Creating the the situation yes, responsible for the penalty no.

  • I find this article to be another in a line of shoddy, tabloid-esque, lazy `journalism`. To focus on one individuals error in a team full of them leads to questions of agenda pushing. Why not do a piece on the utter failings of our captain with a video clip of BOD bypassing him and ordering a kick for the line…? No, you wouldn’t…why not? Its a far more pressing issue that ROGs brainfart.

And before I’m accused of defending Rog, I’ve said before on here that his time is done….

  • Not the only big errors. It was his very poor pass in the last play that forced Marshall to knock on.

The guy looks totally devoid of confidence out there and I can’t remember him ever looking as nervous as in the last month.
In fairness to Rog he has bounced back in the past and you can argue with his achievements in the sport.
Also, he has never been a guy to rely on pace or a big defensive game so if he gets back to his basics I could see him last another few years (even at 35)
Not with performances like that today though.

Coming on with 20 mins to go his job was to settle everyone down, control the game and close it out with the ball from a dominant pack (80% possession.)
He did the exact opposite there today.

I hope for the guy that he gets another chance to wear the jersey as really has been a linchpin to the national team over the years.

On a separate point I think the media is very black and white in the coverage the national rugby team.
Win and weer great, (grand slam!)
Loose and weer terrible (wooden spoon!)
    Ain’t that simple.
