Roberto Martinez: This is why I turned down Liverpool…

WIGAN MANAGER Roberto Martinez has broken his silence on why he turned down the chance to take over at Liverpool.

Martinez said he was more excited by his existing job and his unique relationship with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan confirmed his decision to stay.

The former Swansea manager recently signed a new three-year deal, despite battling against relegation in the past few seasons, and has lauded the relationship he has with the club and the owner.

The 39-year-old coach held extensive talks with Liverpool early in the summer following the departure of Kenny Daglish, but chose to remain at the DW Stadium.

“We must educate people,” Martinez told the Daily Mirror. ”In five or six years, we (Wigan) reap the benefits. Maybe I won’t be there then. But this is not why I stayed, when Liverpool made me an offer.”

Asked why he did stay, which in turn saw Liverpool hire Swansea’s Brendan Rodgers instead, Martinez insisted it was because of the support and persuasiveness of chairman Dave Whelan that they could take Wigan to the ‘next level’.

“I stayed because my chairman is unique,” Martinez said. ”This summer, we sat down together. He had thought about the future of the club, I’d done the same. He knew that I had spoken with other clubs. But he is so persuasive… I extended my contract for three years.

“He wants to take the club to the next level. I know it will be difficult, but it excites me a lot.”

    • That’s my point Dave. They had to pay more for a far inferior player… I never mentioned Carroll but yes they payed over the odds after losing Torres to Chelsea which only reinforces my point!
      What’s your point??

    • Pool payed way over the odds cause they bought players with long contracts , united negotiate really tough the only example of them paying over the odds in the last few years is on rvp

    • So they’re better business men colm is that what you’re saying?
Again my point is reenforced. Is football a business or a sport?

    • Reinforce what point ??? That united are a big powerful club and use it to sign players, well ya that’s how it is and as far I’m concerned football is a game but if u ask the glazers or whatever the liverpools owners name is they view it as a business, case in point the pool owner owns the Boston red sox and they have just gone an incredible 750 sold out games in a row but the money Is not being reinvested

  • Is there ever an article on this or any other app that isn’t anti Liverpool?? Between yeboah and the conspicuous 17 years ago today (17 like) and this negative spin in which martinez is talking about Wigan NOT liverpool I’m starting to think every young journalist has to knock Liverpool to get ahead.
How about an article on how man united are using power to stay in power ( eg. Young 16 mil, downing 20 mil) or that man city and Chelsea are killing the game along with clubs like psg who are buying titles that their clubs haven’t done any hard work to earn other than pulling out the chequebook.
    Why I didn’t go to Liverpool indeed…
