WIGAN MANAGER ROBERTO Martinez has been fined £10,000 over comments made following his team’s 4-0 defeat against Manchester United last month at Old Trafford, the English FA announced on Wednesday.

An FA statement read: “The charge was in relation to a breach of FA Rule E3 concerning media comments which implied that the match referee and/or match officials in general are motivated by bias and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“Martinez, who had requested a personal hearing, was also warned as to his future conduct.”

The Spanish manager was furious after his side’s defeat, during which England striker Danny Welbeck was awarded a controversial penalty following what seemed to be minimal contact from Ali al-Habsi.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Martinez said: “You know what he is trying to do. I have come to United three times before today and for whatever reason we don’t seem to be measured in the same manner as the team at home.

“Today the penalty is as bad a decision as you are going to see in the Premier League.

“In many ways, you feel as though you are fighting against a mountain.”

Wigan are currently fifth from bottom in the Premier League with just four points from six matches while United lie third, four points behind leaders Chelsea.

  • It’s utter nonsense to say SAF and United are given different treatment to others. How many times was Ferguson given warnings in the last few years over his comments about referees, and wasn’t he given a five game touchline ban at one stage too…

  • So a poor team lose 4-0 to a good one that won at a canter despite playing shocking and the manager complains about bias over a borderline pen that would never have happened if he didn’t have a ridiculous headless chicken of a keeper who came rushing out for no particular reason for a ball he was never going to get to, and it’s news why, because the opposition were united, pathetic.
