ROBERTO MANCINI WAS sacked as manager of Manchester City on Monday almost a year after leading the club to the English Premier League title, officials announced.
City’s shock FA Cup Final defeat by Wigan at Wembley on Saturday strengthened rumours Mancini was about to be sacked and the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owners confirmed Monday the end of the Italian manager’s three-and-a-half years at Eastlands.

The 48-year-old’s time at City saw the club win a first major trophy in 35 years with the 2011 FA Cup, while last season’s Premier League title was their first top-flight crown since 1968.
“Roberto’s record speaks for itself, he has clearly secured the love and respect of our fans,” said City chairman Khladoon Al Mubarak.
“He has done as he promised and delivered silverware and success.”
But with City a distant second to already crowned Premier League champions and local rivals Manchester United, a club statement added: “This is the outcome of a planned end of season review process that has been brought forward in light of recent speculation.”
City are 13 points adrift of United and crashed out of this term’s Champions League at the group stage.
Reports in Spain and England have suggested Manuel Pellegrini, Malaga’s Chilean coach, is in line to succeed Mancini.
Yeah same here and I agree with you. To win their first cup in 36 years and title in 44 years and get sacked after one year that was not quite as good is harsh! You can’t say this year is an abject failure, second and a cup final!
Crazy. I actually had a bit of respect for their rich owners because he seemed to be different than Chelsea. Guess not.
The English press didn’t help either. They seemed to be baying for his blood.
I really dont think so lads. Hes the most overated manager there is. With the sqaud at his disposal, he should have done far better domestically, but particularly in Europe. Writing was on the wall after elimination from Europe and completely falling off the pace in tge league. Dont think the FA cup would have saved him.
You have two give the man another season though mate. Even if hes underachieved in Europe, maybe he was just getting used to managing his squad for that comp or something. I just think he needed another season. If he flopped again I don’t think anyone would have cared, but now, it just seems premature!
You obviously don’t follow football, impossible to always win, 3rd, 1st, 2nd,… he wanted van Persie, they gave him Garcia. Club are making a mistake sacking an exceptional coach who was on the end of a crazy which hunt by the UK tabloids. He will walk into a top job at Monaco, AC Milan, PSG maybe even Madrid. Why give somebody a five year contract and sack him for finishing second?? Awful decision
I really dont see how he is exceptional. He fell out with so many of his players this season and last season, he won the league by a miracle last season, and they never looked good for defending it, he publicly criticised his players, particularly bad at handling Tevez, Ballotelli and Nasri.
While the club can be blamed for turning down the chance to get RVP, that would have been adding yet another striker to an already bulging squad, Aguero, Dzeko, Balotelli, Tevez…
And lets not forget either he failed TWICE in Europe, adding to that his record with Inter in that tournament and its hard to see exactly how he was an exceptional coach, when Inter finally started winning the league, it was only because of the match fixing scandal and that he was able to buy key players like Ibrahimovic off a main rival who were relegated a division.
Unreal! First trophies in 8 million years and one bad season you’re out the door! Have they learned nothing from watching the television for the past 5 days?
Did they really have to sack him before the last game of the season. At least let him say goodbye to the fans that seem to love the man. Very harsh in my eyes and im a United fan.
I never tought of him as a great manager but he deserves better than that. He also had to work with some right idiots like Tevez and Balotelli. Doubt they made his job any easier.
Of course he did. He signed them because of there talents and to improve his team not to refuse to play and act like kids when the didnt get there way. Not his falt they are fools.
I would think that Mancinis poor handling of both Tevez and Balotelli only hastened his departure. Man management is a huge part of the modern game, and he obviously was lacking in that category. A gentleman all the same.
@Brian his poor handling of Tevez and Ballotelli? These are two jumped up little nobodies who think they are better than they actually are. The only things he did wrong were: a) sign them (or allow them to be signed) and b) tolerate their antics instead of telling them nigh to F*** Off when they started their lunatic behavior.
As a Man U fan,I’m happy as it means they start with a new manager next year too and lose that stability. 4 years in a job like that was good going,City could turn into another Chelsea with a revolving door for managers.best of luck to Mancini.good manager, amazing player!
Fergie wont dabble and Moyes wont need team selection hints, hes not some rookie. Me or you could pick the utd team anyway,.not the hardest job with the amount of quality there. It would be harder to field a good Everton team every week and he did that for most of his 10 seasons
Its a valid point if someone else made it ManOnTheStreet, but as we can see thread after thread Lashes just makes “bla bla” points ;)
None of the top 5, Arsene aside, will get more than 3 years. Moyes will take a year to bed in and get his own shape on the team, if he hasn’t delivered or slipped out of the top 4 say in the next 3 years he won’t get a 4th. 6 year contract or not.
Headtheball … It’s the reason united have been the most successful club in Britain the last 20 years, the people in charge of the club in the late 80′s had faith in Ferguson and reaped the rewards for two decades. At different stages it looked like both houlier and Benitez had Liverpool moving in the right direction. I personally would have given Benitez more time but we will never know. If Rodgers doesn’t secure a top four finish next season he could be on his way. Arsenal at the moment is a strange one, seeing their best players exit the club season after season. Wenger is a genius but how can he build a top team when every season another top player or two are sold.
What a joke. He won the league and FA Cup and he bought great players like Aguero, Silva and Toure. And remember all of this at a club that won nothing for decades. Man City should have treated him better.
Pure daftness that, he is a good manager and delivered a cup and PL title to them, it takes more than a couple of years to build a solid team and squad. The era of the modern club.
Ridiculous fanboy comment. Even in the third tier their support never wavered. All utd fans I know were genuinely happy when city got promotion back to premiership.
As if the City board give a toss about the reaction to Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement…There will be no such thing as stability at that club, instant success is what they are looking for and they got it last year.Next season,no trophy and he s out the door…that shows real class…first time ever the top 3 in Premier League end up with different manages in August
They’ll probably go for Pellegrino but I reckon Jose would be the right fit for city. Thought they won the title last year despite mancini rather than because of him
Jose might not have as many clubs looking for him as he likes to think. He seems to get bored easy and you only get 2 or 3 seasons out of him. He has a history of falling out with players and directors.
I always though Jose would be at Utd some day but most commentators so far have been saying Utd had no interest because he doesnt bring stability and has a media circus following him. I would like him to manage us but hed have to be there for the long haul like Fergie, dont think Jose likes that though. It says a lot for Moyes when Ferguson himself recommended him.
Lets remember for a minute that City were dismal this season, the title defence was a shambles, their league win was a miracle, he fell out with players constantly, Mancini’s absoultley rotten record in Europe has actually gotten far worse at City!
It may seem odd after winning a League and a Cup, but they were absolutley terrible this year. With the level of investment and the sqaud assembled, they should have walked the league this year and last.
It is as much a measure of how great a manager Sir Alex is, as it is a mark of what an over rated manager this guy is.
Dead right! They never looked like a team this season. It’s easy to be all happy when things are going right ( like last season) but they show their true colours when struggling – fighting with the manager, fighting/blaming each other etc. United were bitterly disappointed last season to lose it on goal diff, but they showed their determination and spirit this season ( with the help of a bit of genius from RVP and SAF) and got their just rewards.
some joke.basically every manager has to win at least one trophy every year to survive in a job. if they were going to sack him could they not have least let him finish the season with some dignity and say goodbye to the fans etc still 28 million of a payoff will keep him happy
It’s because of failure to get out of the CL group stage again this year, and now have possibly blown any chance if future titles, Pellegrini spent 200milion at Real and won SFA in a league were the top two normally win all between them , in the PL any 5/6 teams could win it,and anyone is capable of winning FA / league Cups , so this could be the end of city….
You think Pelegrini had any choice with those transfers, perez’s attempt at galacticos mark 2. And didn’t he break real’s points total at the time but lose out to that Barca team?
Absolutely, Real’s points total was over 90 that season, it would have won most league title. His record with Villareal was v good and the blatant offside cost him a CL final.
I still think Mancini was treated piss poor, handled himself well.
Proof beyond doubt that these foreign owners with deep pockets see football clubs as playthings. When they don’t like what they see, the attitude is to hell with the money, lets just change it around. Spoiled brats springs to mind
Would be refreshing to see platt or kidd getting the job and time instead of more chelsea style bullshit of hiring a new foreign superstar manager every season which is probably gonna happen unfortunately.
Booo. What do these men in suits really want? Only one team can win a league and for a long time it’s the team that allows the manager time. Im a Liverpool fan (hate to admit it but true) but Fergie shows this is the case.
Football is gone nuts. Mancini premiership winner, Di Matteo champions league and fa cup winner and Dalglish league cup winner all sacked within 12 months of their wins. Quickly losing interest in this circus that is English football
I would agree with you in the case of Di Matteo, but that’s Chelski I suppose.
But in the cases of Mancini and Dalglish, their league form was just simply not good enough with the resources they had. Mancini also had two desperate performances in Europe. While Kenny looked like dragging Liverpool further away from the top of the league than ever before.
Has Pelegrini ever won anything? He did nothing when he had money and resources at Real from what I remember and that was a less competitive league than the premiership is now.
This is exactly why clubs like Chelsea Liverpool and City will never have a footballing style or philosophy of their own, how can they when there’s new managers with new ideas and new methods and new coaching staff every year. It’s been said many times here but Fergie was only a success because he was given the time, he could easily have been sacked in 89 but the board seemed to realise that if you want success at the highest level then sometimes you have to deal with a little bit of failure
Madrid? I dont think so. Malaga are probably in a lot more trouble than we think. PSG would come in for him I reckon. Massimo Moratti is still at Inter isnt he? Maybe he’d take him back, Inter have been desperate for years now.
get your money on Mancini to Monaco, very ambitious club, Russian billionaire bought them on the cheap when they went down to French 1st division, now they are back up and are looking for high profile players and a manager apparantly Falcao has signed for them 60 million
Ya monaco is the club that will dominate in France with their 0% tax on wages. Not sure if the 75% tax on wages over a million is still going through for footballers in france but still monaco has a serious advantage here to attract players.
As a united fan, think its a disgrace that a manager who has brought silverware,be sacked in this manner, not even there to manage last game. Also proves time again, money can not buy you continued success. They got fa cup, premier league, and now nothing. Will its current crop of players stay on the gravy boat or look for more success+money elsewhere

Very harsh sacking. And I’m a united fan.
Yeah same here and I agree with you. To win their first cup in 36 years and title in 44 years and get sacked after one year that was not quite as good is harsh! You can’t say this year is an abject failure, second and a cup final!
Me too. Ridiculous. Its almost a carbon copy of Chelsea after they got rid of jose
I agree, with business like that they will go the same way as Chelsea and narrow their market for a good manager for at least the medium term
Harsh enough but with that kind of money spent the expectation level must be sky high.
Crazy. I actually had a bit of respect for their rich owners because he seemed to be different than Chelsea. Guess not.

Stupid decision.Give the man some time anyway.Too many clowns in suits these days making decisions that do more harm than good.
Another one bites the dust
As a Man U fan,I’m happy as it means they start with a new manager next year too and lose that stability. 4 years in a job like that was good going,City could turn into another Chelsea with a revolving door for managers.best of luck to Mancini.good manager, amazing player!
Even better, stability loss/changes at both Manchester clubs and Everton. Happy days :)
No stability lost at United mate, we wont be going through managers every year.
There will be a period of adjustment, it happens! Even if its Moyes getting used to taking fergies subtle team selection hints.
Fergie wont dabble and Moyes wont need team selection hints, hes not some rookie. Me or you could pick the utd team anyway,.not the hardest job with the amount of quality there. It would be harder to field a good Everton team every week and he did that for most of his 10 seasons
United parade the trophy through Manchester while city sack Mancini.Nice contrast between this day last year. MUFC!
City should look at the utd formula if they want a success model not Chelski
I’m a Utd Supporter of 35 years
Sir Alex wouldn’t survive if he was starting out these days!!! 4 years without a trophy
3 and a half years, 3 full seasons.
What about Busby Daglish, shankely. I suppose they wouldnt make it either.
bla bla
It’s a valid point headtheball. None of the past greats would probably last in today’s game if they were starting out now.
Its a valid point if someone else made it ManOnTheStreet, but as we can see thread after thread Lashes just makes “bla bla” points ;)

Good Riddance.
Pellegrini could make City a force in Europe if appointed, and Isco could be on his way to city.
Hire Fergie
Idiots, more money than sense, guarantee they will go trough another manager by the end of next season..
Send for Roddy Collins
A club like man city deserves failure
Ridiculous fanboy comment. Even in the third tier their support never wavered. All utd fans I know were genuinely happy when city got promotion back to premiership.

Yeah I could go for some fancy bottled water now too….. Good call!
Thoughst and prayers are with Roberto at this tragic time.
Ahhh if Roman Abramovich could sack Roman Abramovich…

You think Pelegrini had any choice with those transfers, perez’s attempt at galacticos mark 2. And didn’t he break real’s points total at the time but lose out to that Barca team?
Absolutely, Real’s points total was over 90 that season, it would have won most league title. His record with Villareal was v good and the blatant offside cost him a CL final.
I still think Mancini was treated piss poor, handled himself well.
Yeh ti be fair thats just complete bollocks. 5/6 teams can win it? I suppose youre going to tell me that Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool are contenders?
I think it’s a very harsh sacking, clubs should watch Manchester United and learn, how to run a club and treat a manager..
This was always gonna happen when they lost Saturday! I bet if they won he would still have a job
Harry Potter is a wizard in the dressing room.
So where is he going now?
Everton hardly have the resources? So PSG, Madrid, Malaga?
Going to Goodison
As a united fan, think its a disgrace that a manager who has brought silverware,be sacked in this manner, not even there to manage last game. Also proves time again, money can not buy you continued success. They got fa cup, premier league, and now nothing. Will its current crop of players stay on the gravy boat or look for more success+money elsewhere
What a difference a year makes….GGMU….
Player power and money owns football now
Ferguson for the City job! “Tongue firmly in cheek!”
