Robbie Keane was named the MLS Most Valuable Player last night

After a terrific season with LA Galaxy, the Irish striker has won the league’s equivalent of Player of the Year.

THE MLS HAS named Robbie Keane as its Most Valuable Player (MVP) for 2014.

Ireland captain Keane was last night included in the Team of the Year and has now seen off competition from Seattle Sounders striker Obafemi Martins and New England Revolution’s Lee Nguyen to claim the league’s most prestigious individual prize for the first time.

Having finished second behind former team-mate Mike Magee last year, LA Galaxy skipper produced his best form during his fourth season in the US — with 19 goals and 14 assists from 29 appearances.

Last weekend, Galaxy overcame Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference final and 34-year-old Keane is certain to start when Bruce Arena’s men take on Revolution in Sunday’s MLS Cup.
