LA GALAXY HAVE announced that Robbie Keane has formally agreed to remain in the MLS for the foreseeable future.

The Ireland captain, who arrived from Tottenham in the summer of 2010, has played a pivotal role in helping the Galaxy claim two MLS Cup titles on the bounce.

The 32-year-old has racked up 18 goals and 10 assists in regular season games and, with David Beckham departing, becomes the player with the most experience at the top level in Bruce Arena’s side.

The LA Galaxy announced today that the club has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with forward Robbie Keane,” a statement on the club’s website reads. “Per club and league policy, details of the contract were not released.”

Keane, who is currently spending a fortnight back in England training with Spurs, has also ruled out a loan move to the Premier League during the MLS off-season.

  • I like Robbie as a person and he’s the consummate pro, but by god he’s made a serious amount of moolah considering his talent, which is there, but just quite patchy to say the least

  • The fact that Keane and Beckham – two players who are long past their prime have been pivotal players for the most successful side in America recently, illustrates perfectly how weak that league really is.

    • But what about the assists? And the rebounds?

Come to think of it I don’t think I have ever seen you in the bleachers with me and the other people who red thumbed your comment…

    • And he’s still our best striker! Our best striker of all time at that.

    • Well of course it’s weak, you don’t have to be the financial regulator to realise that when there’s a salary cap of c. $2 million for an entire team, apart from the designated “marquee” players, then you’re going to ave to fill those other places with players of lesser quality. Any American player of any decent standard is going to play abroad in one of the better paying leagues or try and get himself one of the “marquee” contracts.

  • @ Eoin, Robbie Keane = with 18 goals hes joint second highest goal scorer of all time in euro qualifications 1 goal behind sukur in 1st! he’s 11th highest scorer in premiership, and he’s as everyone knows scored more international goals than any Irish or any British player also. you say most of his goals were against weak opposition, let me tell you he has scored against Spain, Holland (twice) Croatia (twice) Germany, France, Italy (twice), Yugoslavia, Turkey, Sweden, Czech Republic (twice) and Russia twice, He failed to score against Brazil and Argentina in 2 freindlys and didn’t score against Portugal but besides that every big nation he has faced he has found the net atleast once. Lastly Robbie Keane is one of my favourite players not just because of the above but mostly because unlike a couple of players weve had he bloody loves playing for his country and tries his heart out. A true legend that is Robbie Keane!

  • Overrated, overpaid, headless chicken springs to mind when I think of Robbie Keane. This drivel about the highest goal scorer for Ireland is just complete nonsense. How many of those were penalties and against extremely weak opposition. The goal against Germany 2002 was the best he did for Ireland. But this running around like a mad man and pointing etc, all to create an illusion amongst us that he is working like a Trojan for his country. give me a fcuking break.

    • Did all the other strikers we’ve had never take penalties or play against weak opposition?

    • I’m talking about Robbie Keane here, nobody else! But now you mention it.Have all the other strikers been held in the same esteem? I think not! Have all the other strikers made shed loads of money from hopping from one club to another but making no real impact at any? Spurs maybe to an average extent. My original point anyways is that he does not deserve the credit he gets. He is a pro footballer so obviously deserves some credit but not to the extent by a long shot that the irish media showers him with. Has held onto an international career that should of ended 4 years ago, some might argue more.
