MUNSTER COACH ROB PENNEY had several reasons for optimism after watching his side punish Connacht for their mistakes at The Sportsground.
Munster beat their hosts 32-23 and took home a try-scoring bonus point in the process. There were no serious knocks to worry Penney ahead of next weekendโs Heineken Cup semi-final clash with Toulon.
The New Zealander told RTE that he expected a difficult evening in Galway as Connacht, having shipped 58 points against Ulster, attempted to tighten up defensively.
Asked if Munster needed to play their best game of the season to beat defending Heineken Cup champions Toulon, next weekend, Penney responded in the affirmative. He added, โWe thought that against Toulouse [too] and, obviously, going away and playing Toulon. Weโll need to be at our very best and then some.โ He reasoned:
Connacht are tough in their home ground but, without being disrespectful, honestly it is chalk and cheese. Weโre going down to play a top side โ the reigning champions of European rugby. Itโs a massive ask for us but weโll prepare well and we look forward to having lots of Munster people down there and giving it a good shot.โ
Speaking to reporters, post-match, Penney commented, โConnacht are a good side; theyโve played some good rugby today. They showed, at times, they are a capable unit and tough to break down. We made a number of changes coming into this game and gave people an opportunity coming into next week. Some of them really put their hands up and to get five points up here truly is a bonus.โ
Penney was delighted that none of the 21 players he used on Saturday picked up knocks. โThose that needed a bit more footy got that,โ he added, โthose that wanted a rest got that. We couldnโt have asked for a better outcome, given the distractions of next week.โ
Connacht coach Pat Lam, for his part, struggled to pick out the positives of another game in which his team leaked tries. He told RTE, โBottom line is, we gifted [Munster] 32 points. Our main thing, in rugby, is you look after the ball โ you are selfless, to look after it for the team.
โPlayers [here] aspire to go to the next level. The difference between a good player and a great player is making good decisions and executing them. We put them under a lot of pressure, turned the ball over and they went up the other end and scored. Iโm very disappointed.โ
He added, โA few players got exposed today but thatโs the learning. Thatโs the hard reality. Weโve all been there; Iโve been there. Itโs about how we learn from it and move on.โ

Keep the ball and make them work for every inch. Allow them to run at you and it will be a long day.
Keep the kick / boxkick and chase game to a minimum and starve them of the ball they love.
It would be a fitting end to the HC if an Irish team win it. And as much as I hate saying this with Munsterโs history it would a perfect end to the competition
Can appreciate that uncomfortable sentiment coming from you Chris, so nice one.
Leinster would not have been the team they became only for Munster equally the HC would never have become such a great competition only for Munster and their traveling army of fans.
Nothing gives me greater pleasure than Leinster beating Munster but Iโve never wished anyone else to.
Hear! Hear! Best of luck in Marseille. Yizโll need it.
Much improved Munster performance from last weekendโs horror-show against Glasgow. Call me crazy, deluded, biased, but Iโve had a feelinโ in me waters since Toulouse that Munster will beat Toulon, and Iโve no idea why or how, just one of those mad-cap feelings. Lunatic, I know!
The main difference between this week & last is that Glasgow are becoming a good side, this week they were playing a poor Connacht team, whose only good spell this season was during the six nations, when other teams are extremely weakened by international absentees.
OโConnell looks fairly serious for a man congratulating paddy butler for the bonis poibt securing try. Butler is stepping back from him in fear
Leinster made Toulon look good kicking to them all day. Munster should keep the ball and run at them hard and often, then they can beat them no problem.
Who is going to do the running Andy
Ah yea, itโs that simple. I hope you tweeted that over to rob penny.
Zebo & earls.
Who cares Martin, hopefully somebody will at least try, I canโt remember when Leinsters runners were so static. Big improvement last night it was ten mins before they kicked the ball.
God love us down there , very worried
Munster will stand up and fight โฆ These are the games we want โฆ. The one time the red jersey looks 10 ft tall is when we face star studded players. But this is a team sport โฆ Munster will not be pushed back.
