Richard Dunne confirms he will keep playing for Ireland

The Aston Villa defender joins Robbie Keane in staying with Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad.

RICHARD DUNNE HAS told Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni that he will be available for the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, as soon as he returns from injury.

With Damien Duff and Shay Given recently deciding to retire from international football it had been feared that Dunne, 32, would follow suit.

However, the Aston Villa has followed the example of Irish captain Robbie Keane and, following a meeting with Trapattoni in England on Saturday, has confirmed he will continue to play international football.

A statement from the FAI released this afternoon said: “Giovanni Trapattoni and Marco Tardelli held a positive meeting with Richard Dunne today.

“Richard reconfirmed that he will be available again for international duty once he makes a full recovery.”
