AN AMATEUR FOOTBALL match in Brazil ended in tragedy last Sunday, as a referee was beheaded after he allegedly fatally stabbed one of the players involved, according to reports.
The incident took place in Maranhao, Brazil, with the reports suggesting that referee Otavio Jordao da Silva stabbed Josenir dos Santos Abreu.
The deaths are understood to have occurred after Abreu struck the referee following a contentious decision, before da Silva reacted by stabbing the player.
This prompted a group of angry supporters to tie up the official, subsequently beating, stoning and quartering him.
A 27-year-old man was arrested by police following the deaths, with two more suspects wanted.
Valter Costa, who is overseeing the case, said: “One crime never justifies another crime. Actions likes this do not collaborate with the legality of state law.”
