FOR A CHANGE, it’s not the referee who needs glasses — it’s the fans.

Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy took to Twitter to plea for clemency last night after receiving streams of abusive tweets intended for Premier League referee Chris Foy.

Foy enraged Tottenham Hotspur fans yesterday when he waved away what manager Harry Redknapp described as “the most blatant handball you’ve ever seen” during the second half of the Londoners’ 2-1 defeat against Stoke City.

A handful of furious Spurs supporters took to Twitter to air their grievances afterwards but, presumably blinded by their rage, ended up slamming a Knight of the British Empire instead of the man in black.

“Just for the record 1) I don’t need glasses and 2) I do not lead a double life as an English [Premier League] ref. That’s Chris Foy,” Hoy tweeted last night in an attempt to end the confusion.

But when the abusive messages continued this morning, the 2008 cycling champ saw the funny side and started the #FoyNotHoy hashtag.

“On the plus side I’ve learned some new 4 letter words today,” he joked.
