Reddan gets the nod as Sexton keeps his starting spot

Declan Kidney opts for a Leinster mid-field pairing, as Cian Healy, Rob Kearney and Seán O’Brien all return to face the Wallabies.

Leinster's Eoin Reddan will partner Jonathan Sexton in midfield for Ireland's clash with the Wallabies, as Conor Murray is demoted to the bench.

DECLAN KIDNEY has restored Eoin Reddan to his starting XV ahead of Ireland’s crucial Rugby World Cup clash against Australia in Auckland this Saturday.

Reddan comes in in place of Conor Murray, who had earned only his third-ever cap in Ireland’s underwhelming victory over the United States last week.

Reddan resumes his midfield partnership with Leinster teammate Jonathan Sexton, who is preferred over Ronan O’Gara despite a wobbly performance with the boot in the 22-10 victory over the United States.

Elsewhere, Rob Kearney returns to the side at full-back – with Geordan Murphy not even taking a place in the matchday squad of 22. The rest of the back-line remains as it was, with Brian O’Driscoll and Gordon D’Arcy in the centre, flanked by Keith Earls and Tommy Bowe.

In the forwards, Cian Healy – who sat out last week’s game after an injury to his eye socket – returns to the front row, with Ulster’s Tom Court demoted to the replacements’ bench.

Rory Best, who scored the second of Ireland’s three tries in Sunday’s win, is retained at hooker – with Jerry Flannery having picked up an injury to his calf in training yesterday, though the Munster man still makes the bench.

Mike Ross retains the number 3 shirt, with Sean O’Brien coming in at flanker; Shane Jennings, who had started against the US Eagles, does not feature.

  • No real surprises, picking Sexton ahead of O’Gara will do wonders for his confidence. The team named has the potential to beat anyone in the world, it’s down to Kidney’s tactics now. No more negativity, let’s get behind the team and beat those Aussies. C’mon Ireland.

  • O’Gara is a liability against a team like Australia. We can’t have any defensive weaklinks in the team and O’Gara is an obvious one to exploit. He can’t tackle.

  • Ireland will regret not having an out and out 7 v Australia. Sean O’Brien, best player in Europe last year but not a ground hog, he is either a 6 or 8. Feel Jennings should have a place on the bench at least. Have we no other 7s in this land? Why is Donnacha Ryan taking up residency on the bench? Imagine O’Connell gets injured in the first 15 mins of the game, a Ryan, O’Callaghan partnership is scary. I know he covers for the back row as well. But I reckon we should have a dedicated second row on the bench.

Also what the hell does poor Trimble have to do to oust Earls?

The rest as expected. Personally I would have thrown Ferg in instead of D’Arcy. Delighted to see Reddan partner Sexton, lets hope they can bring some Heineken Cup winning magic to the table!!

    • Agreed with you on every count, Donal. Personally I don’t understand Kidney’s fixation with Keith Earls, who I personally can’t remember has having a standout ‘good game’ for around two years.

  • Have to agree with every point you make there. Leo, Jennings, Fergus & Trimble should all feel hard done by. Why Kidney had his contract renewed before the world cup I’ll never understand.

  • Looks like Deccie is placing his faith in Sexton as the owner of the No 10 shirt. Not a bad strategy. O’Gara makes a good super-sub.

    • If Kidney has learned anything from last weekend, it’d better be that Sexton needs a 100% perfect day off the boot or Rog is going straight on instead of him. I’d have pulled Sexton off straight after his first balls-up last Sunday. You saw the impact O’Gara had on the pace of game right after he came on. They were a different side altogether, albeit for only fifteen minutes,
Too big an occasion for Murray alright. Give him a go next week and see how he gets on, but this Saturday’s game is too crucial to take any chances.

  • Makes no sense to start the game with no one able to kick the ball

    • Against Australia the last thing we should be doing is kicking a ball. We are not playing 2002-2007 Munster Rugby/Ireland Grand Slam Rugby. The game has changed since O’Leary/Stringer fed ROG who kicked to corner and then the pack tried to challenge the line-out. If we kick against Australia we will be annihilated. Ireland need to move on like Leinster has to a more rounded game.

Defensively Quade Cooper is shocking but he can read a game great, the Australians put Adam Ashley-Cooper or another back who can tackle in the 10 defensive channel and Cooper has a license to roam across the back 3. He has a great eye for judging a kick and is regularly on the end of a re-leaving kicks and when Cooper has ball in hand from a kick looking at the full field and positions of the opposition he is at his most dangerous. He has started some amazing attacking moves and scored some great tries from this position for both Reds and Australia.

To beat Australia we need to keep it very tight have the forwards smashing up ball close and then use Reddan/Sexton’s vision to spread the ball once the gaps appear.

Finally stating “Makes no sense to start the game with no one able to kick the ball” adds nothing to this debate. It is trolling. Kearney, O’Driscoll, Sexton and Reddan are all very effective kickers from hand and Sexton had the best scoring average from boot in the Heineken cup last year, so this statement is just trolling.

  • Not picking O’Gara is going to cost Ireland experience is everything for this one, this idea of a “supersub”is not going to beat de aussies ,you need to match them from the first min and take them on ,i fear for Ireland now and expecting certain players to change things in the second half is a bit irish to be honest.
