Raheny United rise and Shine to rack up their second Women's Champions League win

Clare Shine bags another two goals as Dubliners take a huge stride towards the next stage.

A BRACE FROM Clare Shine ensured Raheny United got the better of NSA Sofia of Bulgaria and secured a second successive Champions League win, taking a dramatic step towards qualification for the final stages of the tournament in the process.

The Dubliners, buoyed by their weekend success over Romania’s Olimpia Cluj, started brightly but Sofia began to get a foothold in the game until Shine, who grabbed the winner on Saturday, opened the scoring in first half injury-time following good work from Siobhan Killeen.

Five minutes after the interval, the Irish doubled their lead. Shine again applied the finishing touch, teed up by Under-19 colleague Katie McCabe.

With over ten shots on goal, Raheny coped admirably in the intense Romanian heat and saw the game out, restricting Sofia to half-chances. They now head into their final fixture against Maltese side Hibernians FC on Thursday needing only a point to progress to the last thirty-two of the competition. They’ll also become the first Irish team to ever top their Champions League group.

Peamount United managed to navigate past the group stage back in 2011/2012 but eventually bowed out against PSG in the next stage.
