Furious Rafa Benitez blasts Chelsea fans, confirms exit

“I am a professional and I will do my job. At the end of the season I will leave.”

CHELSEA INTERIM MANAGER Rafael Benitez’s patience with the club’s fans finally snapped tonight as he confirmed his intention to leave the club at the end of the season.

Benitez has been targeted by sections of the club’s support ever since he was appointed as the successor to Roberto Di Matteo last November.

Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and they are also in the last 16 of the Europa League, but they have slipped to fourth place in the Premier League.

Benitez was only appointed on a temporary basis but he confirmed in an angry press conference that the abuse he has received from some of Chelsea’s fans had prompted him to abandon his ambition to coach the team on a permanent basis.

“I’m disappointed with some fans. They have to support the team instead of wasting time making banners. They have to support the team,” he said.

Benitez also appeared to take issue with the Chelsea management for insisting on the temporary nature of his employment.

“They (Chelsea) gave me the title of interim manager, which is a massive mistake. I am the manager and I will manage this club. The fans are not helping us,” he said.

“I am a professional and I will do my job. At the end of the season I will leave.”

Not his fault di Matteo got sacked. Only man mad enough to take that poisoned chalice is mourinho so I hope he rejects them too

    • In fairness, there was a huge amount of bad blood between him and the Chelsea fans from when he was Liverpool manager. On day 1 it was about as popular as when George Graham was appointed Spurs manager. So it wasn’t just the Di Matteo sacking.

I guess he’s found out that the Chelsea fans have passion after all.

I can’t see him in charge of another Chelsea match, never mind to the end of the season.

Now, Big Sam reckons The Special One is on his way back. That’s when it could get interesting.

Aidan… English football clubs have entered European association football competitions (UEFA Champions League/European Cup, UEFA Cup/Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners Cup) since 1955, when Birmingham City and London XI took part in the inaugural Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The European Cup started in 1955?56, but there was no English representative during that inaugural season as Chelsea had been persuaded to withdraw by The Football League… according to Wikipedia anyway. So Chelsea qualified but didn’t turn up??? Highlight of your history that!

You’ve just confirmed exactly what I said.
They happened to be in the right place when the decision was made. Is this the best you can come up with? Did they win it that Year? No? So what are you on about. Nottingham Forest have 2 european cups.
Now, Step away from the shovel.

    • Also Aidan,
They were given permission to play, as all clubs do now.
EUFA five 4 places to the English FA. Its completely up to the FA who they put forward to the competition.
If the FA decide to give the 4 places to the teams at the too of the red card league, that would be up to them.
They give the places to the top 4 clubs in the league, but they don’t have to.
So, yes, the FA do give permission to all clubs to play in Europe. They cannot play in these competitions without the FA’s say so.

      1. Did I say they won the European Cup?

      3. Should the Champions of England be called a team that “won something”?
      4. Would you call being told you’re not allowed play in something you fairly qualified for as “being in the right place at the right time”?
      5. Would you say that being the first club to qualify for European Football is not a part of history?
      6. What do Forest have to do with this? Only 8 or so clubs off the top of my head have won it more times.

    • Oh Aidan,
Basically, what I’m saying is, if they won the league in the first year that English clubs were invited, it’s just a coincidence. The club the year before was just as qualified to play in the competition.
It’s not some big thing to brag about.
Now, Forest, they have something to brag about. 2 cups.
If you want to claim this as some big achievement, fair play to you. I actually don’t care. And I’m sure that only CFC fans would care. The rest of us are laughing at this great achievement.

    • True point, but still Chelsea were the first English team to qualify for Europe. Being the first English club to qualify is history. Someone said Chelsea have no history, so I stated a part of the club’s history, proving that there is history.

I could have given you a report on what it was like to see greats like Peter Osgood and Charlie Cooke in action, or the old shed, the numerous FA Cup wins that meant the world to the club, winning the old Division 2, the days of Zola, Robbie Di Matteo and co. that were a joy to watch. These were all amazing things I have witnessed, and are the reason for my love of Chelsea Football Club.

Some chose clubs because they won European Cups, Leagues, year in, year out. But in my day I picked tiny Chelsea. It was easy to support them until Roman came, now to see the club get the abuse it does is hard to watch.

Mourinho’s Chelsea is history too. “You have no history” is a typical response of either Liverpool or Man Utd fans. Whatever their methods, Chelsea have history and are creating history. Reply
    • No chance, £80m in debt. Debt isn’t a bad thing if you can pay it off, which Chelsea would have done. Take it from someone who was regularly at matches during the time.

And false, average attendance in 2003 was 39770. – over 200% your presumption.

I see you said a few years earlier though, but since 1995 average attendances have been at least 25000, so argument is flawed.

Bad choice to be appointed as manager, interim or not, fans were never going to get behind him. The bigger joke is abramovich who sacked Di Matteo after a poor run of only 6 games. Abramovich has turned the club around ( at least his money has ) over the last 10 years but has to learn to give a manager time ( at least 3years ) and ability to do their job without sticking his nose in, particularly as they are still going thru a big squad change from the team that won in 2010.

How after 10 years at Chelsea he has not copped on to this will always be one of life’s little mysteries.

Would Old Trafford be happy if Kenny Dalglish was appointed Ferguson’s successor? Would Lansdowne Road be happy if the IRFU gave the managers job to Martin Johnson? Would Hill 16 have cheered on the late Páidí Ó Sé if he took charge of the Dubs? All these scenarios would obviously never work out, just like Rafa at Chelsea.

People can criticise Roman Abramovich all they like – but he runs a successful football club. Yes he changes managers too often and doesn’t give men time in the job, but whoever he appoints delivers trophies. I’m sure if you asked an Arsenal fan would they prefer to have won the trophies Chelsea have won since 2005 changing manager every time there’s a slip-up, or keeping hold of the one manager while going trophless for 8 years, they’d take the first one. Popularity doesn’t matter. It’s about success.

Also, nobody on here knows what goes on in the dressing room. Nobody knows that Terry got managers sacked. It’s all speculation. Just like speculation that Declan Kidney is going to lose his job soon. Probably true, but not definitive.

I know for a fact this is going to get bucket loads of red thumbs, but lads it’s the truth.

Of you’re going to use the quote about the atmosphere at Anfield for a reason to hate the man, try to read the entire quote…
“We don’t need to give away flags for our fans to wave – our supporters are always there with their hearts, and that is all we need. It’s the passion of the fans that helps to win matches – not flags.”
Here’s the quote that hangs on the wall at Melwood training centre. The actual quote mind, not the other versions that did the rounds.

      http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/11/22/article-2236795-16265F8D000005DC-347_634x702.jpg

The quote is about Anfield and also You can’t deny that flags were given out at Stamford bridge. Why else was that done, other than to create an atmosphere. Why would you try to create one if there is one to begin with?

I’m assuming that you also wouldn’t now welcome Jose Mourinho back to the Bridge. After all he did say this…
“I felt the power of Anfield, it was magnificent”

It’s a stupid reason for Chelsea fans to dislike Rafa. He was only stating the obvious. Even the Special on agreed.

      Reply
    • Alan – Chelsea weren’t “on the verge” of bankruptcy

Niall – absolute garbage. One question. Ever been to a game at the Bridge? If so which game. I’m sure you’ve heard the Bridge sing We know what we are this season, happens every match.

Deborah – find me a Chelsea fan that wants Fernando Torres at the club next season.

Danny – Again, ever been to a match at the Bridge? Obviously flags were given to add an extra edge to the occasions of big European nights. It’s brilliant seeing the stands covered in the flags, don’t tell me it isn’t.

Yes José said Anfield had a magnificent atmosphere, everyone knows that. Just because he said it was great doesn’t mean he thought SB “had no atmosphere”. If I drive a BMW and I see a Ferrari and I say it’s magnificent, does that mean I think my BMW is a heap of scrap?

      Reply
    • It actually isn’t Aidan. It’s quite pathetic actually. It gives the impression to the outside world that the club don’t trust the fans to bring proper flags and banners.
You do remember the A4 printed pieces of paper used by CFC fans in Rafa’s first match?
The funniest one was when Torres joined. A lovely new flag was in the stands. Except, they couldn’t quite trust themselves to think of an original one, so they copied the Anfield one, and changed the colour.
One problem, it still had the Shankly Gates at each side. The fans, thinking that it was just a design at the sides hadn’t realised the significance.

Yes they were on the verge of bankruptcy in 83, I thought the club was gone to be honest. But that has nothing to do with Roman, as your comment stated. Again, in 2003 there was never really any worry, the club never really looked like going under.

    • Sorry Aidan if you think I backed down, I didn’t. Mourinho said it. Have a look for yourself.

There was less than 10 A4 posters. You’re labelling the millions of Chelsea fans by less than 10 people’s actions, who just happened to be at the corner flag, a coincidence you could call it, you seem to be into coincidences.

The banner was purposely just blue instead of red. It wouldn’t have got Liverpool fans as angry if there was just a blue flag with El Nino written on it.

You see, Mourinho did say ” I felt the power of Anfield and it was magnificent.”, didn’t he?
In the exact same way that Rafa was talking about Anfield not Stamford bridge, I can easily twist Mourinhos words to say he thought Anfield had a better atmosphere.
The point is, the quote that you read on the CFC websites attributed to Rafa is twisted as well. He never used the words “stupid flags..” Either. But someone decided that this was about SB, when it was was only about Anfield.
Any thoughts on the fans using an Anfield song when they couldn’t come up with one themselves?
I’ll have to answer any posts in the morning. Bed is calling. Night all.

      Reply
    • Yes José said that, I said he did an hour ago – “Yes José said Anfield had a magnificent atmosphere, everyone knows that.” And to clear it up I meant everyone knows Anfield has an amazing atmosphere.

Rafa disrespected Chelsea fans. He did. Full stop. Whether his comments were the truth or not, he still disrespected the fans, and he has paid for it.

Ahh and finally you decide you have to give in that your Mourinho story is first class manure. “Easily twist the words”. So what you’re saying is he didn’t actually say it? Shocking. So Chelsea fans should hate Mourinho because he said Anfield was magnificent on the night of a Champions League semi final, probably one of the biggest games at Anfield in the last 20 years.

Don’t tell me Rafa’s comments weren’t about SB. Is it just another “coincidence” that he happened to be talking about flags in the build up to a Champions League semi final v Chelsea? Undefendable. I never said he talked about “stupid flags”. Show me this twisted quote that’s on CFC websites.

Singing “Fernando Torres, whoever’s number 9″ isn’t exactly the work of Johnny Logan in fairness. It’s just an easy song to sing. If United win the Champions League this year I’m sure they’ll start singing “We know what we are”, and Chelsea fans won’t be crying about it that’s sure.

Another coincidence that you go to bed when you crack on your Mourinho story, good night.

You may also remember he won a La Liga title with Valencia. He did this with players like Mista, Ruben Baraja and David Albelda. Remember those names? I didn’t think so. Not exactly key figures in the game. Who were they up against? Real Madrid. Who had Luis Figo, Balon D’or winner and World record transfer from Barca, Zinedine Zidane, Balon D’or, World Cup winner and in some eyes the greatest ever and again a world record transfer, Ronaldo, Balon D’or winner, golden boot winner at World Cup 2002 and all time World cup top goalscorer, David Beckham, a key player in the greatest team the Premier League has ever produced, Real madrid legend, and all time champions league top goalscorer Raul and Iker Casillas who at 20 had won every domestic honour available to him and who recently picked up another European Championshils medal to go with his other two international medals.

Rafa won the league beating all of these guys. All of them. To call him an awful manager, well, its just silly if you dont mind me saying so.

      Reply
    • Not exactly nothing. He won the club world cup. But admittedly this was a poor spell at a club. Inter haven’t recovered from that season.

I don’t really see what difference it makes that Valencia was almost a decade ago (that was 03/04). Its still an incredible achievement. He wasn’t exactly a dud at Liverpool either. A champions league, a final of another two years later, an FA cup, Liverpools only meaningful title challenge since the fall of the Berlin wall. Look at the state of Liverpool since he went.

What he did with Valencia and Liverpool is incredible. You cant write that off just because he struggled with Inter who in fairness onlu ever rose to any prominence because of the Italian match fixing scandal. They had the pick of the best players in Italy and won the league by default for several years. but eventually the other teams recovered and Inter returned to their dismal state they were awoken from with the relegation of Juventus.

Again, keep the red thumbs coming lads, but still I haven’t said anything but the truth here tonight.

    • I really think comparing trophy cabinets with Liverpool isn’t the best idea there Aidan.

The first English team to qualify for the European cup. Well f#ck me I’ve heard it all now. That’s your argument for your clubs history. And in 1955 Liverpool were in the second division. What’s that got to do with anything. Any idea what they won over the next 30 years. What about united over the last 20 years. That’s history. 3 league titles, ONE European cup and 4 FA cup in FIFTY YEARS doesn’t make history. Even if United win nothing over the next 50 years they will still have about 10 times the trophies you plastic flag waving joke of a club will have. And I’m not a united supporter.

    • I couldn’t resist this one.

In 1901, Liverpool FC celebrated their first league title.

4 years later in 1905, Chelsea FC were formed.

Any more little bits of history you want to throw Aidan?

    • Well Niall if a man gets labelled a “dick” for defending his favourite team speaking 100% truth, I don’t know what the world is coming to.

Nobody on here knows CFC like I do. No one here has held a season ticket at Stamford Bridge like I have. In fact, in all probability nobody here has ever held a season ticket at any Premier League club.

People here just think in their heads that Chelsea were a solid 12th place team for 98 years, winning nothing, until Roman came along. Anyone who knows more about football will tell you the truth.

Chelsea FC, forever the minority, forever uncared.

      We ain’t got no history.

  • Benitez is a dreadful manager! Inherited a great Valencia team that had reached two European cup finals managed by Hector Cuper, then inherited a half decent Liverpool side who beat Chelsea in a Euro semi final with a ball that never crossed the line!! He started the rot at Lfc and blamed the owners for not backing him after spending millions then went on to treble winners Inter and made a balls if that too! Himself and Chelsea deserve each other as someone has said previously, Chelsea would be down in mid table if it wasn’t for that Russian crook! When he fecks off Chelsea will be bankrupt!
