2010 US OPEN Champion Rafael Nadal has revealed that he will not take part in this year’s tournament at Flushing Meadows.
The former world number one is still suffering with tendinitis in his left knee, an injury which kept him out of the Olympic Games.
Indeed, Nadal’s last match was his shock second round defeat at the hands of Lukas Rosol.
With the fourth Grand Slam event of the year due to commence August 27, Nadal took the difficult decision to withdraw, tweeting the news after informing tournament organisers.
Tournament director David Brewer said in a statement:
“We hope to see [Nadal] back on the court soon and look forward to his return to New York next year.”
The Spaniard, 26, did manage to claim the French Open on his favoured clay surface this year, beating Novak Djokovic after the Serb had pipped him to the Australian Open.
