Rafa Benitez on Chelsea talk: ‘If someone wants to make an offer, I will listen’

The former Liverpool boss was in Dublin last night to accept an award from the Trinity College Dublin Philosophical Society.

RAFAEL BENITEZ HAS said that he will listen to any offers that come his way but insists that he is looking to manage a club that will fight for trophies and preferably in the Premier League.

Speaking to TheScore.ie last night in Dublin, the former Liverpool boss would not be drawn on the specifics of a possible offer from Chelsea but did not rule out the possibility of taking up the reins at Stamford Bridge following the weekend departure of Andre Villas Boas.

“I don’t like to talk about what will happen,” he said when asked about the possibility of moving to Chelsea. “So I think that the first thing is that if someone wants to make an offer, I will listen to the offer and after we will analyse it. But at this moment you can say – because it depends on the offer – that you never know.”

The 51-year-old was speaking after being awarded the Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage from The Philosophical Society at Trinity College Dublin. Benitez was cited for his ‘outstanding contribution to sport’ and gave a talk on his career and his managerial style entitled: ‘Belief, Determination and Success’.

Benitez has been out of work since he left Inter Milan in December 2010 but has continued to play an active role in football, regularly appearing as a pundit on Sky Sports’ coverage of Spanish football as well as developing a coaching and tactics programme for the iPad which he hopes to market at some point in the future.

He told TheScore.ie that if he was to take up a managerial role he would want the opportunity to compete for trophies and said that while there had been big money offers to manage clubs, he did not feel they were right for him.

“You want to win trophies, you want to have the opportunity to fight for trophies,” he said. “I have received offers from different countries, some of them massive money but it wasn’t the money. My idea now is to have a good team.

“The priority is [to manage in] the Premier League. Why? Because I know the league, I know the style, I think that we can do well. My family is settled down here. If I cannot find a top side that you can fight for trophies, okay I will look around. But now I am waiting because the offers, they were not the right offers.”

Liverpool days

Benitez continues to live at his home in Wirral where he was based during his time at Liverpool between 2004 and 2010. He plays an active role in raising money for local charities in Merseyside through his wife’s organisation, the Montse Benitez Foundation.

Devoting a large amount of his talk to students and invited guests at Trinity last night to his time at Anfield, he sought to challenge some of perceptions of his team whom he guided to European and FA Cup success as well as second place in the Premier League in 2009.

He pointed out that during two of his seasons at Anfield, his side were the best in the league at defending corners using the much-criticised zonal marking system and challenged the portrayal of him as consistent rotator by pointing out that Alex Ferguson rotated his Manchester United team more during the time when the pair were adversaries.

On media criticism during his time at Anfield, he said: “It’s difficult because when I had the conversation with the journalists after the press conference or we had the press conference before the game everything was fine. But little by little some of them would say ‘Oh no, I think this…’ Maybe they were not analysing the figures. You have seen the numbers, so it’s strange but it was like this.”

Of the current Liverpool regime, Benitez offered his belief that Kenny Dalglish needed to remain in charge “for a while” but said the club made mistakes in the aftermath of his departure after the club finished seventh in 2010.

“The problem is that people are talking about Liverpool: ‘Oh they have changed, it’s a work in progress’. But you had Hodgson in the middle and all the signings of Hodgson were not good enough. You had just one, Meireles, and they sold Meireles. So I think they made too many mistakes, the club,” he said.

Benitez said he had enjoyed his brief trip to Dublin and hoped to return with his wife next time. Admitting to being “a little bit surprised” at being invited to speak at Trinity, he attempted to learn a bit more about the historic TCD.

“I was trying to know exactly what was going on and a little bit about the history and the Book of Kells and all these things and I was really impressed,” he told the press.

“I say that I will bring my wife because she’s a lawyer and she used to be in this environment all the time because she was a teacher also in a university. So I think that she will enjoy it.”

Stay tuned to TheScore.ie for more from Rafael Benitez on Ireland, Robbie Keane and their chances at Euro 2012 later this week.

Are you off your head? The man signed in excess of 20 players that should NEVER have played for a club like Liverpool.
John Aldridge said in an interview when Kenny took over again that there was close to 90 players in the last 15 years that should never have been signed.
Or do you mean Rafas famous ‘net spend’ transefer policy?

    • You have no idea. He was working with the worst owners in the history of the club. When he brought wordl class players to the club and he was backed properly he would of had Danny Alves, Silva and Mata to name a few playing at the club. He bought some duds on a small budget….his net budget per year was 14mil. But you armchair fans fail to see the real facts and truth. He made Liverpool one of Europe top teams and was within a whisker of winning Prem league and would of done the next season if the owners had invested in his wish list of signings.

  • Of course rafa wants the chelsea job. Most managers do. Sign a 20million 4 year contract and then get turfed out within a year then settle for a 8 million pay off and leave with 13 million in your back pocket for 9 months work. A goldmine is that job.

Spot all the Scousers. The Rafa love-in is ridicilous. The man is a buffoon.
Fluked his way through his LFC days. European cup in 2005 was Houliers team, the denial amongst LFC fans about this is astounding.
Id LOVE to see him go to Chelsea & then back to Liverpool.

*DONT TELL CHELSEA BUT THE MAN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR IS FABIO CAPELLO*

    • How do you know Rafa Benitez was a successful manager? Mr. Ferguson threw one of his usual b**ch fits when Liverpool started to get close to United, and then had his little bum chums Sam Allardyce and the rest of them start fights with him too. Same as he done with Wenger and Keegan before him.

    • I love how a Utd fan thinks he knows what is/was best for LFC.
Do you never stop and think, why do so many LFC fans appreciate what he did for the club? His work was much more than managing the first team.
He fought for, and gained eventually, control of the academy. He was only in charge for 9 months and transformed the ethos. His legacy for those 9 months is coming to fruitition now, with players like Shelvey, Suso and John N’Goo coming of age. The academy hadn’t produced a player of note in 12 years.
He regularly met with fan groups like SOS to discuss their concerns. He didn’t hide from the owners, but openly told fans what was going on behind the scenes, as you would know if you read Brian Reade’s book.
I wouldn’t know or care what is going on in the background at Utd with the Glazers, but I assume you do and care. I’m sure you would appreciate your clubs fan groups that have been set up to campaign against the Glazers.
Rafa wasn’t just a first team coach at LFC, he put everything into the club and youth system.
That an idiot like Purslow was in charge towards the end, wasn’t his fault. But he will always have the love of LFC fans for what he did.

    • N’Goo, a different player to N’Gog. He’s English.
Don’t worry, if you haven’t heard of him, you will.

    • How is it a conspiracy theory. Theres a trend with Ferguson that everytime a manager starts getting close to him in the league he turns on them. As Benitez himself said, they’re relationship was fine until Liverpool started getting really close. Only manager he hasn’t done it too is Mourinho, prob cos he wants him to take over from him.

  • This is a ridiculous article, the truth is nobody would rule out the job, money talks to everyone. This is just the media hyping shit up as usual. Chelsea have already stated they won’t make a decision until the end of the season, meaning they need time to think.

  • Why on earth would Chelsea want Rafa Benitez????

Football is the only sport I know where failure is a sure fire way to get another job…the mind boggles!

Europe simple as that. Two champions league finals in three years is some record for a club who spent less than half of what Chelsea did. Also torres and rafa work well together.

    • Rafa Benitez is far from a failure as a manager. You must be joking.

    • Add to that list of achievements, a La Liga title with an unfashionable club outside of the usual 2.
Before anyone judges him, have a read of the book An Epic Swindle by Brian Reade from the Mirror. It doesn’t focus on Benitez, but it givse the background on the final 4 years of his time at LFC.
I would gladly have him back at LFC anytime. I actually hope all other clubs fans continue to under appreciate what he has achieved. A part of me would hate to see him at a club where he has the backing of the owners and that club isn’t LFC.
But to those detractors, read the Reade book, then make a judgement on him. I can guarantee that non LFC fans, and also some of our own fans, do not realise what went on at the club.

  • As a Chelsea supporter I do not want Rafa, neither to I want Pep or Jose. Rafa can be argued to be able to get the best out of Fernando but at what cost to the rest of that team would it be, is it even possible to get anything more from Torres? Can you polish a turd?

Pep has done amazing things with Barca, however he has Messi to rely on and whole host of supporting players like Inestia and Xavi who in any other team would be mega stars.

Going back to Jose would be a massive step backwards. He left us high and dry when the going got tough. The fact of the matter is he plays negative ugly football, it is however effective. I can’t see Roman swallowing his pride after all the bitterness that went on.

For my money I’d say give it a bit of time Di Matteo is there till the end of the season. I say give him the job with Zola as his assistant. Zola and Di Matteo are legends at Chelsea and where part of the team that made Chelsea a top level team, player power won’t take these 2 down as the fans wouldn’t let that happen.

If we fail to qualify for the champions league next year it may just be a blessing in disguise, it will give us a season without the pressure from the owner to win the Champions League.

Is this how you measure success?
Do you forget the fahcts rant?
He cracked up under the pressure.

    • Do you remember what everyone was talking about before that press conference? What were people taking about after?
Remember the glint in his eye when he took the sheet out of his pocket, or the cool and calm way it was read out? How does a rant go again? A rant seems to me to involve some element of anger and raised voices.
That press conference was all about deflection. It certainly worked. People are still talking about it, yet I never hear a word about what went on during the week before. He’s been asked this question, but never answers, except with a smile. You can continue to believe he “Cracked Up” if you want, as Utd fans sang shortly afterwards at the start of the game at OT, except of course the LFC and were singing the same thing after the game ended 1-4.
Anyone that cares about him, don’t really care what you think of him. ;-)

    • Liverpool had a much better points per game record after the “rant” then before, including one week were they put 4 past Utd and Real Madrid plus 5 past Villa. Misconceptions about form come from the fact that Liverpool drew the 4 games directly after it which coincidentally was that seasons bad patch.
