CHELSEA INTERIM COACH Rafael Benitez has risked sparking a fresh war with Alex Ferguson by appearing to question the Manchester United manager’s “education”.

The pair frequently clashed during Benitez’s previous stint at Liverpool and the bad blood was in evidence again during Sunday’s 2-2 draw between the sides in the FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford.

United led 2-0 through early goals from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney, but the hosts took their foot off the pedal and Chelsea hit back through Eden Hazard and Ramires to force a replay.

After the final whistle, Benitez strode down the touchline towards the tunnel with apparent disregard for the conventional managers’ hand-shake that usually follows the end of the game.

However, when asked to explain himself, Benitez suggested he had acted in retaliation after Ferguson blanked him prior to the game.

“I was waiting at the beginning,” Benitez told reporters. I was in his way and he… (gestures to indicate Ferguson walking past).”

When Benitez was asked why Ferguson had not greeted him, he said: “Ask him. If you are brave enough, ask him. I don’t know, it’s his decision. I was waiting.

I have education, because I know a lot of people are watching, so I know what I have to do.”

Questioned why he had ignored Ferguson at the end of the game, the Spaniard smiled and said: “I was with my players, celebrating.”

  • Fergie cant stand benitez for the simple reason he’s the only manager ever to speek he’s mind about sir red nose and he was spot on in what he said, and that boils he’s blood. Not the biggest fan of benitez either but i luv the way he gets on sir red noses nerves.

  • The English media always rounds on anyone who expresses an opinion against Man Utd or Fergie, look at Roy Keane last week… Drives me insane!

So even though I’m no fan of Rafa, you gotta admire his guts for saying what all other Prem lge managers (and sky/bbc pundits) are too scared to say.

Rafa has nothing to lose now and he’s absolutely correct in saying Fergie has no class or manners.

  • Govan bottom feeder! Can hardly speak English either. Fergie is a revolting human being!

  • Fair play to rafa – nice to see someone stand up to ferguson without fear of reprisal. If Alex was ignorant enough to ignore him at the start why would rafa bother hanging around afterwards? Great contrast with Murinho who amazed me with his sucking up to all things Man U last week – was embarrassed for him.

  • Since when has it been customary to shake hands before a match? I always thought it was at the end? Which Rafa admits he ignored to ‘celebrate’ a draw!

    • Well the custom with the players is to shake hands before the game most of the time they flash to a video of the coaches shaking hands when they arrive at their dugouts. I think it usually happens afterwards too. In all honesty the amount of controversy of hand shakes in the last few years in the premier league is enough to give you a headache. They all need to grow up!

    • The players do in their lines, which is a bit ridiculous regardless but I always thought for managers the accepted etiquette was after the match. Also, celebrating a draw is just sad.

  • “Sir ” Alex has ignored other managers more than anyone else, put other clubs down more, and belittled everyone and anyone he thinks is getting in HIS way ….. hopefully UEFA will not succumb to his tantrums !!!! Unlike the FA !!

    • Hilarious comments as usual. Since when did football become a popularity contest?

    • Louise, let you in a bit of detail about Rafa, he has had running feuds now with Sir Alex, Neil Warnock and Big Sam. He told Everton that they were “a small club”.
Now, based on what you said, your equally describing Mr Benetiz.

    • Well,Aidan, Mr.Benitez has not done himself any favours, for sure. But,its “Sir” Alex that has rubbed the most people /managers et al the wrong way,and also called Newcastle a “small” club . I guess he’s still “upset” about the Nani affair……..

    • Louise we know what he said about Newcastle and retracted it, something that Rafa didn’t do, in fact he said he was right to call them that.
What other managers did he rubbed the wrong way? Kevin Keegan brought it all on himself if you want to mention him. As for rubbing other people, I presume you mean fans, if thats the case thats irrelevant, he is there to win trophies, which he has done, not win friends so I am sure he won’t get too upset with that.
As with regards Nani, I am sure he is well pis**D off, if you ever played sport then I am sure you wouldn’t enjoy losing either.

  • Lol he is a funny man for one with no job, no hope and no hair. Education doesn’t equate to success, ask any of the most successful business men around, then again the fat waiter wouldn’t know much about either.
Cheerio Rafa, looking forward to u serving us in a bar in Spain.
