Sexton upset as knock-on call denies Scarlets scalp for Racing

A ball-ripping tackle from the outhalf looked to have set up a match-winning try for the French side.

JONATHAN SEXTON WAS not backing down over a contentious knock-on call that cost his side two points at Parc Y Scarlets on Saturday.

The outhalf kicked 16 points for Racing Metro in their 26 — 26 draw with Scarlets but was upset with referee Neil Paterson for calling a knock-on against him. Sexton ripped the ball from Josh Turnbull in the 81st minute and set up Wenceslas Lauret for what looked to be the match winner.

The score was ruled out after a video replay, however, and Sexton was left to rue that. Add to that, a missed penalty attempt in the closing minutes and Sexton’s mood was dark when Sky Sports caught up for a post-match interview.

“I had a [penalty] chance to put us in front and then I thought we had a try at the end,” he commented. Sexton was not backing down on his stance even after viewing a replay of the incident. “I ripped it out of a tackle,” he shot back, “so what’s the rule?.”

“I don’t know,” he added. “I think the rule is, if you rip it out it’s [OK].” Sexton felt a draw was a fair result but admitted to bitter disappointment after the no-try ruling. Skip to 4:45 of this highlights package to judge the knock-on decision for yourself:

He said, “We were down to 13 men at one stage and down 13 points but we managed to claw our way back.” Scarlets turned a 10 — 0 deficit into a 23 — 10 lead before Racing battled back. Both sides took home two points apiece and remain unbeaten in their Pool 4 endeavours.

Scarlets captain Jonathan Davies was disappointed his side could not follow up their win over Harlequins, at The Stoop, last week with a home win. “Towards the end of the game,” he said, “our errors let Racing back in the game and, to be fair to the, they stuck in there.”
