SEPP BLATTER IS seriously considering stepping down as FIFA president in two years, rather than staying for the full four-year term, according to reports.
ESPNsoccernet reports that plans are being discussed to replace Blatter with current UEFA president and France footballing legend, Michel Platini.
The move would be seen as a compromise, given that Blatter has come under increased criticism during his tenure, with several members of the organisation calling for his resignation on account of the numerous recent controversies that have undermined his regime.
Blatter dismissed these suggestions on his official Twitter page, describing the claims as “pure nonsense”.
However, a source told ESPN that it seems highly unlikely that Blatter will survive the four years in charge:
“There is now widespread conjecture within the European game that Blatter won’t be able to survive for the full four-year term, which is already designated his last term before handing over to Platini.
The source added that Platini was the only “creditable candidate” to take his place.
Blatter has had four terms as FIFA President, first undertaking the role in 1998.
