QUEVEGA TOOK FIRST in a thrilling Ladbrokes.com World Series Hurdle that defied the poor conditions at Punchestown today.
It’s the third year on the trot the eight-year-old has won the Grade One.
Billed this year as a face-off against Voler La Vedette, it proved as much but Willie Mullins’ mare had too much in the end and the 11-10 favourite sprinted clear with Ruby Walsh on board.
“Obviously Voler La Vedette was in some form,” said Mullins afterwards, “and had great form coming into the race so I was quite worried, but she did the business. We keep it simple — one run every six months. We follow a plan and it works well.”
