IRELAND’S SANITA PUSPURE got the job done in London this afternoon to qualify for the quarter-finals of the women’s single scull rowing.

Puspure was drawn against the highly-fancied Emma Twigg of New Zealand in this afternoon’s first heat, with four automatic places available in Tuesday’s quarters.

A solid opening 500m gave the Latvian-born rower the start she needed and although she was comfortably passed by Donata Vistartaite of Lithuania long before the finish line, her chances of progression were never in doubt.

Twigg won the heat in 7:20.24 from Vistartaite (7:43.07) and Puspure (7:49.35). Brazil’s Kissya da Costa was fourth in 8:07.75.

China’s Xiuyun Zhang set the fastest time in qualifying, winning in 7:21.49.
