Dublin Marathon runner, 27, dies after finish-line collapse

Organisers of the Marathon have expressed their condolences for Ricki Savage.

Updated 22:00

A RUNNER WHO suffered a heart attack following Monday’s Dublin City Marathon has died.

Ricki Savage, from Thanet Roadrunners Athletic Club on England’s east coast, collapsed on Merrion Square after finishing the 26.2 mile run in a time of three hours and 10 minutes.

In a statement released this evening, Marathon organisers commended the work of St John Ambulance and St Vincent’s Hospital.

Savage,  an experienced distance runner completing his first Marathon, was said to be in a ‘stable but serious’ condition until his untimely death this afternoon.

Alan, how narrow minded you must be! You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about if you think that a marathon is too dangerous.

While its very unfortunate that he died running the marathon, hes one of the very very few to have died as a result of this in Ireland. Statistics show that for every 70,000 runners doing the marathon, 1 will usually die. With the Dublin Marathon, this % chance is even lower! Its generally 1 in every +100,000 people! Had those 100,000 people not started training for the marathon in the first place you can be guaranteed that more than 1 of them would have died as a result of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or stroke!

Its an unfortunate fact that an extremely small number of people will die as a result of it, but the marathon saves far more people than would have been alive otherwise!

Thats not including the extra lives saved as a result of the money raised by kind hearted individuals (like this gentleman) running for charities!

Joan, “in the pursuit of fitness” is the wrong mind-set to have regarding this. Had he been in the pursuit of fitness he would have been happy with a 4 hour marathon. He was a seasoned runner in the pursuit of success, just like every other runner who can run close to a 3 hour marathon.

To run that sort of time takes an unimaginable amount of work. To be at that level he must have dearly loved running at an entirely different level than just for the fitness aspect.

One consolation for the family is that he died doing what he loved.

    If
You could interpret your own fancy personal ECG monitor while
Running it would probably take the whole fun/enjoyment/mental agility out of running for these great guys. Plus on speculation these types of underlying conditions often special tests to uncover them. I’m not being rude but I really doubt your own heart rate monitor would tell you anything except from the fact you were tachy. All my condolences to family and friends left behind rikki. For every 70,000 people that run a marathon, statistics have shown that 1 will die as a result of it. In the bulk of cases it’s a result of one of two reasons. One being that there was an underlying issue such as sudden adult death syndrome and the other being that the person pushed themselves too far in the heat of the moment. It’s not the actual marathon that kills people. If a person does their training, approaches it logically and sticks to a realistic plan through the run then the likelihood of anything happening is even lower.

For every one person that dies doing a marathon it saves many many more that would have died as a result of diabetes, hypertension or heart disease had they not started training for the run.

Hopefully the family can find some comfort in knowing that he died doing something he obviously loved.

Swagman, most people dont do marathons to “stay limber”. You would understand that if you ever actually took one on!

People do it as a personal challenge, the achieve success or to tick something off their bucket list and be included in the 1% of the worlds population that actually ever complete a marathon!

on average, worldwide, 1 in every 70,000 marathon runners will die during the race. Had all 70,000 not trained for that race you can be guaranteed that more would have died of some health related illnesses that were resolved thanks to their new found fitness and health!

On top of that, for very fit individuals “walking and stretching” simply wont cut it!

I agree with you that allot of people do over-push themselves, which isnt the correct thing to do, but this may have been an underlying issue that nobody was aware of! He may have felt quite good throughout the race.

How many people die running marathons year after year, yet we stand by and watch as another poor soul falls foul of this dangerous and idiotic “pastime”. We should not allow this on our city streets. Not at this price. In the name of so called sport.

The number of people who die running marathons is absolutely tiny, particularly when compared with the number of people whose lives are enhanced and lengthened through healthy physical activity. Nothing is without risk in this life, but the risks of coming to harm through running are way less than the risks to health of being a couch potato.

    Rob is 100% correct!

Swagman, rather than asking these silly questions, why not do your own research and find out for yourself how little the number actually is in comparison to the number of lives saved as a result of the marathon!

Final bit …. For years I cycled back in the day for transport & fun … Not race I was never that good but touring cycling …. And some of they happiest memories my wife & I have are of pushing ourselves cycling in the Scottish Border region … AWSOME time … I’ve had a few crashes ,1 left me with a skull fracture 13 stitches a broken shoulder 3 broken ribs a punctured lung & multiple small stones embedded in my back …. But as soon as I got the cast off I was back on the bike … It was something I NEEDED to do … So I respect him but feel sorrow for his family ..,,THATS MY FINAL ON IT

Such a sad and tragic story, and what makes it even worse is that this young man was running for the British Heart foundation, so he died will trying to help others. May he rest in peace, and may god give his family strength at this incredibly difficult time.
