Reading have started reasonably well against City, given the supposedly considerable gap in quality between the two sides.
They’ve even made the odd foray into the hosts’ penalty area.
GOAL FOR WEST HAM!
Carlton Cole evades the attentions of Heitinga and fires home (14 mins).
There’s an element of controversy to the circumstances in which the goal is scored though, as Everton think they had a legitimate goal ruled out previously.
GOAL FOR NORWICH!
West Brom 0-1 Norwich: The Canaries fine form continues, as Snodgrass gives them the lead (23 mins), while West Brom show further signs of decline.
Interesting that Reading’s defence, who have coped relatively well with the City attack so far, have not one but two Irish players in their backline – Alex Pearce and Ian Harte.
Also noteworthy is the fact that both Pearce and Harte were left out of the starting line-up during the visitors’ ill-fated clash with Arsenal last week.
In fairness, Reading’s improvement probably owes a much to a change to a more defensive-minded system more than anything else.
So a relatively quiet day so far, with just two Premier League goals to speak of.
Although as I type, Yaya Toure has a penalty claim waved away, so it’s not exactly incident-free.
Perhaps Trap was right all along…
GOAL FOR WEST BROM!
GOAL FOR SUNDERLAND!
Southampton 0-1 Sunderland: Steven Fletcher (who else?) has given Martin O’Neill’s side the lead, after a good ball across the box from Sessegnon (42 mins).
West Brom 1-1 Norwich: Zoltan Gera scores on the rebound for the baggies, after an Olsson header from a corner comes off the bar (44 mins).
It’s now half-time in all today’s Premier League games.
The trend seems to be one of defensive caginess, with only one game (Norwich-West Brom) featuring more than one goal.
The second halves are just getting underway now…
Setanta’s Brian Kerr said Reading “parked the bus” at half-time.
It’s hard to see how they’ll retain such discipline with so little possession in the second half, but they’ve at least shown a good attitude so far.
If the score does stay the same at Eastlands, Man United will have the opportunity to go eight points clear tomorrow.
Surely City won’t slip up against the Premier League’s bottom team though.
Reading’s two Irish players combine, as a well-executed Harte corner finds Pearce, who heads just over.
Man City have not been at their best today by any means.
Incredible stuff, as Zabaleta gets to the by-line and chips in an inviting cross that narrowly misses the heads of two City players.
The City fans growing increasingly impatient with proceedings.
GOAL FOR EVERTON!
West Ham 1-1 Everton: Toffees fans will feel justice has been done, as despite hints that he impedes his marker as he does so, Anichebe’s header from a Pienaar cross brings Everton level (64 mins).
All to play for in the final 25 minutes at Upton Park.
RED CARD FOR CARLTON COLE! Things go from bad to worse for West Ham, as the big man is given his marching orders for a high challenge on Leighton Baines.
The consensus seems to be that it was a somewhat harsh decision.
GOAL FOR EVERTON!
West Ham 1-2 Everton: This game has turned completely around in the space of a few minutes, as Pienaar gives Everton the lead (71 mins).
Meanwhile, Reading have strong appeals for a penalty turned down, as Rekik shoulders Jay Tabb off the ball, as the Irish midfielder charges towards a cross.
GOAL FOR WEST BROM!
GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE!
Newcastle 1-0 QPR: It looks like QPR are set to lose their first match under Redknapp, as Ameobi curls an effort home (81 mins).
WBA 2-1 Norwich: Lukaku has also got a potentially vital goal for the Baggies (81 mins).
RED CARD FOR DARRON GIBSON! Both sides now have ten men, as the Irish midfielder is dismissed for another high challenge.
GOAL FOR MAN CITY!
Man City 1-0 Reading: Gareth Barry climbs above Shorey and heads powerfully home (90 mins).
Reading will not be happy with the referee, as he could easily have blown for an infringement.
