Poll: will Ireland now qualify for Euro 2012?

After one of the most incredible night in Irish football history, do you think Trap can take advantage?

SO HOW ARE we all feeling this morning?

Last night, may be one of the most memorable in Irish football history.

First, Ireland somehow earned the unlikeliest of points despite a 90-minute Russian onslaught.

Later, incredibly, Armenia hammered Slovakia 4-0 in Zilina, throwing open the group again.

Russia are now top with 17 points, Ireland are two behind in second while the Armenians and Slovakia are on a total of 14.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s now prepare for an away tie in Andorra and a final game showdown with those dark horse Armenians in Dublin.

So what do you think will happen?

Poll Results:

We'll come second, and lose our play-off again (464)
We'll come second, and win our play-off this time (383)
We'll top the group, Bill (185)
Did you see yesterday's game? We won't make the play-offs (121)
Don't care (70)

Another twist: Armenia hammer Slovakia on crazy night for Irish football

I really hope we qualify but in reality we’re woeful. The last two performances were shockingly bad. Hope they can pick it up for the final two games, we can’t afford to drop any more points.

I think the Armenia match has got Ireland’s typical nervy nil-nil a la Liechtenstein all over it. You would like to think that they would get 6 points out of 6 from the last 2games, giving them a shot at top spot. But they are yet again hoping for other teams to do them a favour. Prob get the Czechs or the Swiss in the playoffs, sneak a 0-0 away from home, and concede a stupid goal in the Aviva consigning us to yet another summer supporting anyone but the English. Nothing ever changes!

I think we’ll reach the playoffs, then, who knows. Our current midfield aren’t great & that’s being kind, but would love to see ‘em qualify all the same.

I think Richard Dunne and Shay Given’s enthuasm is infectious and this display against Russia was a master class in what spirit and determination by a few can drive a team. great for children looking for role models in life as well as sport. No tantrums or bad sportmanship just pure sport and professionalism. Brilliant. Well done to the Irish team.

Of course I hope they qualify but to be fair if you weren’t Irish you’d have to say no. It would be unfair for a team who relies on clean sheets to go through, we have no midfield and honestly I think it’s one of the worst Irish teams in my lifetime. I think it will be heartache at the play-offs

“to be sure” I thought only bad English comedians doing bad Irish impressions said that.

Adrian, I strongly disagree that ‘yesterday may be one of most memorable days in Irish football history’. How we got a point was strange to be sure and nobody would have predicted Slovakia’s result. However, in 2 or yrs very few ppl will remember yesterday’s events.

Have to say…I can’t see us beating Armenia. I’m certainly hopeful for a victory against them, but they are scoring goals left, right and centre and in great form. Ireland on the other hand, although we’re not conceding any, we’re not scoring any either. Armenia has some issues in defence, but they’ve discovered their own magical formula – hold the opposition til half time and then use the time old formula “attack is the best form of defence” tactics, so that even if they don’t score, at least their opponents won’t either.

If Ireland cannot put out a vastly improved midfield, it would be very difficult to make an impact in the finals. Bring on McCarthy for the next two games and maybe we could progress.

At least throw him in against the might of Andorra and maybe give Wes Hoolahan a game, at least he is playing first team premier league football

Please correct me I have calculated this wrong, but I reckon Ireland will need just a point at home to Armenia to ensure second place? (Assuming we win against Andorra).

No your wrong 4 points would give Ireland 19 and Russia and Slovakia could get 20 each

Tony, you are right. That scenarios only happens if Slovakia beat Russia though. In which case a draw is no good… but a win puts us first. Such a mad group :)
