IT’S THAT TIME of the year again.

RTÉ today released the shortlist for this year’s Sports Person of the Year Award, the Team of the Year award and a new award, the Manager of the Year.

The RTÉ Sports Team of the Year shortlist includes: European champions, Leinster; Dublin’s footballers; Ladies football kingpins, Cork; Ireland’s soccer team, Shamrock Rovers; Kilkenny’s hurlers; camogie champions, Wexford and the country’s Cricket World Cup heroes.

All credit due to KT but woman’s boxing is such a small field, there’s not a whole lot of competition. She’s definitely the biggest fish, but it’s a very very small pond…

You better get your atlas out Kevin. He’s Irish, could never be classed as British in the geographical sense of the word. You might legally be allowed call him UKish but it just sounds soooo wrong!

Rory was born along with all of us in the British Isles. He makes a point of not flying the tricolour. He said he’d represent the UK in golf Olympics. He is a British citizen of the UK (Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
He’s about as Irish as Charlie Chan.

I couldn’t give a shit what he, or you for that matter jumpthecat, want to call yourselves. I have a very good memory. Geographically he’s Irish. I don’t want him to win anyway. It’s Katie Taylor for me all the way!

“He makes a point of not flying the tricolour.” What? It’s not like he makes a concious effort to fly the Union Jack. He played under the tricolour not two weeks ago at the Golf World Cup. A few years ago he said in an off the cuff statement that he would represent GB&NI, a statement he has since rowed back on. Basically because golf is a non representative sport in most cases, it’s only the Olympics where this is an issue, and on comment threads such as this, with people like you attempting to label someone with a complex background into easy and lazy groupings. Golf is widely recognised as a 32 county sport.

Saying he “thinks he is British” and other such comments ignores his background, the complexities of the situation and is really just plain ignorant to the facts.

If my Da was training the world’s greatest horses when I was 18, I’d have been youngest ever Breeders Cup winner.

Joe O’Brien is a talented and a very good young jockey, but his father’s position has given him opportunities that would never be available to jocks of a similar age.

So he shouldn’t win because his dad is a trainer? Katie Taylor grew up with her dad training her. McIllroy’s dad taught him how to play golf. Bernard Brogan’s dad played for the Dubs. We’re not discussing socialism here. Credit where it is due and if you have a family member who helps, more power to you.

You miss the point and back it up with illogical reasoning. The expensive, world class horses at JP’s disposal are the tools in which he achieves his success. Like McIlroy’s swing that makes his shots better than others. Or Brogan’s feet that have the accuracy or power like few others. Or Katie Taylor’s devastating, accurate punches that make her a champion. Their parents merely encourage those talents – it’s a little different to what Aidan provides for JP.

I also didn’t diminish JP’s achievement; I merely point out other jocks of his age are unlikely to have similar opportunities and therefore there are other more deserving winners of the aforementioned award.

    is all. ;)

Sounds like a begrudging attempt at socialism. So what if someone is rich or has a good parental or financial backing? You can’t say someone isn’t a great sportsperson simply because they are privileged….simply sounds like begrudgery.
