Poll: Has Trapattoni taken the Ireland team as far as he can?

Many people believe the Italian’s tenure as Ireland manager should end. What do you think?

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni watches last night's match.

LAST NIGHT’S PERFORMANCE against Kazakhstan only served to enhance the level of disillusionment that many supporters feel towards the Irish team.

While Ireland ultimately escaped with three points, the manner of the performance was so poor that it had some people, including RTE analyst Richie Sadlier, calling for the manager’s head, while #TrapOut trended on Twitter.

However, others such as John Giles and Liam Brady argued that the FAI should persevere with the manager for the remainder of the campaign at least.

While it may not have been pretty, Trap succeeded in ultimately securing a win, albeit against a side ranked number 142 in the world.

Trap’s pragmatic brand of football was enough for Ireland to reach the Euros, however the side’s subsequent failure in the tournament led many fans and pundits to express hope that the Italian would alter his methods and tactics substantially.

Nonetheless on last night’s evidence, he appears unwilling to change the side’s approach – a philosophy that has frustrated so many followers of the Irish team.

So with all that in mind, do you think Trapattoni has taken the Irish team as far as he can?

Brian Kerr is starting to look like a footballing genius.

Trap seems to be getting a much easier ride than his predecessors.

Maybe it was easier to fire a man on a couple of hundred Grand than someone on the guts of ?2m.

    • Time to wise up here. Ireland isn’t a proper playing football country! Half the people in this country are deluded. Qualifying for big tournaments as often as Ireland does is a massive achievement. Look at Scotland and Belgium for example. Two countries with strong football histories! I mean when was the last time either of them qualified for the finals of a major tournament? I say be grateful for any manager that gets Ireland to a major finals. My only gripe about Trappatoni is the lack of effort he’s put in to learn English.

Giles wasn’t much better but fair play to Sadlier – he calls it as he sees it and his views reflect the majority opinion of the fans. GO TRAP!!

The game that we played France and Henry handled the ball was one of the best Irish performances I’ve seen. So we can play football it’s just TRAP is not allowing the team to play.

Has to go after this qualification!

    • Fair comment Pat. There is a big difference between a fantasy football team and one that will win a match. Cox on the wing is the only puzzler. Doyle was playing poor upto this. Long is being called for but it is either him or Keane. For me Robbie will still get more goals. His penalty was once again excellent, despite the pressure. If Long and Mcclean go on and do well this season then maybe. Gibson isn’t good enough from what we’ve seen so far. Westwood had a great debut, puzzled why people would include Forde.

  • Funny how Giles and Brady won’t criticize trap. Brady used to work for the fan and i met glee and delaney out boozing once. fair play to Sadlier.

    Reply
    • Giles did criticise him. They called it Caveman football and the panel have been critical of the team for years (something they have been abused for previously).

Brady is obviously in a tricky position and probably should analyse Ireland on TV whilst Trap is manager. But even still he criticised the team selection and performance. He just disagreed about sacking him (and added a bizzarre comment about the players needing to get Trap to change styles).

  • I think Trap has come as far with the Irish team as he is going to go. He restored the Irish brand to some degree of respectability steadied the ship and got very good work rates from limited players. The problem is the system has been found out totally. Every team we play against knows how to exploit it now and the main problem is the lack of a plan B. The 442 formation has become redundant in the international game. Most set ups now play with 5 in midfield and we could easily do that given the players we have. Ireland needs to rebuild with the younger players it has as most teams have to do eventually. Clearly Trap is not the man to do that. A better man manger is required to get the most from what we have. I would thank Trap for rebuilding the confidence in the set up at a difficult time for Irish football but the reality is his tenure has now expired.

Everyone is saying it’s great he got us to the euro’s but what’s the point in getting to a major tournament and then being humiliated the way we were, score 1and concede 9.

    Reply
    • So we should get a manager that can’t qualify us? What is the point to your post?

Trap has made big mistakes, but I fail to see your logic. Qualifying is obviously a positive. Even the top teams are liable to have a terrible tournament, that can and does happen. France did in 2002. The Netherlands did this year, Argentina did in 2002 and in the last Copa America. there are plenty of other examples. Posts like yours are reactionary nonsense.

2 WORDS “TRAP OUT”…….We’ll soon be ranked 142 in these Mickey Mouse placings. All we want is the best and not to be a joke of a team….I want to be singing “COME ON YE BOYS IN GREEN” while sipping on a rum and coke in Rio for 2014 :)

We’ve a great selection of average players but with the right manger we can make it happen. Trap has lost the plot and our best player will probably never play for us after his Twitter comment. Not all the players have lost respect for him but there is something not right there.

When he managed the Italian team in 2002 and were knocked out by the Koreans, he’s pig headed and will stick with Keane, Cox, Whelan, Green and McShane…. It’s going to be a disaster but proove all of us wrong Trap !

Bring in Brendan Rodgers when he gets sacked from Liverpool? oh wait the FAI will never get rid of him, it’s all about the $$$$$$$$

    Westwood
    Coleman St. Ledger Dunne O’Shea
    McGeady Andrews McCarty McLean

  • Trap did well getting Ireland to the euros but since then he has shown a distinct lack of imagination and a total lack of a plan B.

There also seems to be an unwillingness to blood younger players unless forced to.

The fact is for several years Ireland were playing beyond the sum of their parts and when the bubble bursts it’s not easy for the fans to accept.

HOWEVER, this fickleness is becoming scary. Mick mcarthy and brian kerr were ousted in the exact same way. An angry mob after a few bad results. What happened to “in trap we trust”, that was only two months ago. We need to make a decision here and accept responsibility for it . There were very little ppl here complaining right before the euros started.

In fact, anyone who has a clue knows we have an extremely limited team and are still hanging onto expectations that were formed from two eras when we had fantastic or even in some cases world class players, that was Italia 90 and Japan/Saipan 02.

  • Nicholas, I think your point is fair about losing the dressing room but I think that some players have fed into the negative public and particularly the media commentary. Disaffected players now believe they can influence Trap’s departure. McClean wouldn’t have pulled that stunt with Martin O’Neill. I stand by my comments about the players abilities. Look at the ones left out. Gibson & Stokes both have always had attitude and have you ever seen either play well for Ireland. Hoolohan always liked him with Shelbourne but he’s 30 now. Plinkington journeyman no better than players in the team and worse than most. Coleman would like to see him included but he’s not getting any game time with Everton. It is just worth checking the records and see the players available to us since about ’74. The current players are a pretty weak selection.

    Reply
    • Henry i agree with those guys you’ve mentioned.
Hoolahan is too old, Pilkington is far from a journeyman though and he’d give us a good option.
I also agree with you on Gibson.
But Ireland is playing well for Villa, and Clark is now becoming a regular too, (a better option to St Ledger)
Wilson is a much better option to Ward (Premiership regular vs Championship)
Stokes has had fallings out with the past, but thats no reason to banish him, – he’s only played 4 times for Ireland after all. I wouldnt drop Whelan though, i just wouldnt start him.
Players have been difficult to manage in the past for all sorts of managers, its the good managers that can get the best out of these guys. Trap doesn’t want to bother, because he written off our ability as good footballers.
I agree that we had better players available in the past, (1974-1994) but our current crop aren’t worse than the Ireland players of 2000-2002.

  • Last point on this. You’re right about Whelan he’s so slow it looks as if he’s running under water. But Stephen Ireland – you can’t blame Trap for that. He refused to play under Kerr (Kerr didn’t play him in an under17 match in Cobh). He played a few times for Staunton and then refused to play for him. He also refused to play for Don Givens (friendly match). He is a finely balanced character with a chip on each shoulder.

    Reply
  • He plays a defensive style of football, this dosent make sense, our defense is we we are at our weakest, our best players are our attacking players where we have some great young exciting talent but since trap has completely lost it he dosent realise it. We should be playing to our strengths but our manager is too stubborn to change his ways. Sure he has a lot of experience but it’s been a long time since he had any success. The game has changed immensely since then and traps knowledge if the game is still in the 90′s . Personally I think it’s good that some of our great ls have retired because it gives a chance to have a new team grow into a proper international set up but we also need a new manager to grow with the players and develop them as internationals. Not an old style minded manager who will retire in two years and couldn’t care less about the team after he goes. He is looking for a retirement fund, not a legacy anymore. He already has his legacy.

  • People on this don’t have a clue. Calling for the style of football to be changed. Changed to what exactly? No alternative has been suggested. We have limited players and a small squad get over the style of play you’d think we had messi and Ronaldo available the way people are talking. We won playing shite most teams would take that.

    Reply
  • Anyone who thinks that this group of limited players can compete at international level by playing attractive attacking football is a moron.

In the starting line up against Kazakhstan we had four championship players, two MLS players and a goalkeeper who cant get a game for Sunderland.

Now maybe I’m missing something here but to my mind, this is not a line up that can reasonably be expected to compete with the top level international sides for any great period of time.

Richard Dunne would have started for O’Dea if fit. Thats one guaranteed change.

In an ideal world Simon Cox would not have played left wing.

These are two obvious changes. Whatever way you look at it any remaining changes do not greatly enhance the quality of the team. They may improve it but not to any huge extent
    .

Stephen Kelly in at RB and John O’Shea at LB perhaps. McGeady LW with James McLean or Seamus Coleman RW and any two from Kevin Doyle, Johnny Walters and Shane Long.

After that we’ve little or nothing that will get the “attractive football” that people are using as a stick to beat the manager over the head with.

    Reply
  • Who do we replace him with?

Any half decent manager with more than two brain cells can see that this is a group of players of limited talent. Mr Trapattoni should be given an award for getting this group of players to the fnals of a major championships.

It is understandable that people may not like his style of play, unless we start employing miracle workers as manager of the Irish senior international manager I fail to see how the team will improve to any great degree whether or not the present managr stays in place.

    Reply
  • Yes the style of play is awful but what about results. Whether people like it or not the team has made significant progress under Trap. Before his arrival we failed to even make the play-offs in the previous 3 competitions. In Brian Kerr’s last foray we finished fourth ( yes fourth – Ireland had never previously finished fourth). Under Staunton we descended into being a frightened rabble – a full 6 points behind the second team. Trap made us a team again. We reached the play- offs in his first campaign failing to qualify against France in very controversial circumstances. In his second we reached the Euros for only the second time in our history. It might be convenient to believe that without this old Italian we would be spraying the ball around like Barcelona and winning all round but that is fantasy. This is, player for player, the weakest Irish team since the early 70′s. This team would be relegated if we played in the premiership. It’s easy to play attractive football and get beaten. Look at West Ham in their last relegation season. Seems to me Trap took one look at these players, didn’t fancy them and decided to make us difficult to beat. I’m sure we could play differently under another manager but this team is at the limits of its ability.

    Reply
    • The problem is now that Trap could be losing the dressing room, playing in this style, which could make us LOSE anyway.
If you take into the consideration the players not in the squad combined with the best of whats available, there is plenty of quality there, in my book as much quality as Mick McCarthy had at his disposal when we qualified for World Cup 2002.
Also, the fact that so many promising players are not been given the chance adds to popular opinion starting to turn against Trap. I think you may be underestimating our potential to play a little.

      Reply
  • I think under the right management we can still push for qualification of major tournaments playing decent football.
I would say if the right guy approached Stephen Ireland he could be convinced to return. Let be honest despite his past mistakes he’s still a quality creative player when his head is right. He also gives us more options in team formations.

My squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers – Lets go with youth!

Westwood (He needs to get first team football though)
    Wilson, Clark, Coleman, Duffy, Kelly
O Dea, St Ledger, O shea, O Brien
Robbie Brady, Coleman, Mclean, Ireland, Mcgeady, Pilkington, Gibson, Whelan, Noble (In the past he showed an interest)
Long, Walters, Cox, Doyle, Stokes, (Cillian Sheridan as back-up)

I reckon in a year we’ll be looking for a new manager and for me Mick McCarthy would be the lowest risk best option. Tried and tested, brings through youth, wants to play football, and no Roy Keane to worry about.

Long and Walters should be the strikers, hoolahan and Gibson in the centre, McClean and Coleman on the wings. O’Shea Dunne Clark Harte as the back four and Westwood in goals, that team is a very capable team on paper and won’t be playing muck like last night either!

Playing for your country should be unquestionable, so the important missing point I believe Trap’s old school approach doesn’t help with the modern day footballer(of which a lot is wrong) where International football actually isn’t the pinnacle anymore and international managers should be adaptive and encouraging to develop international squads.
