POLL: Should Ireland alter their formation for the Croatia game?

In his post-match comments last night, Trap revealed that he is open to playing 4-5-1 to shore up the midfield.

WITH JUST FIVE days until their opening game and having watched his side being overrun by Hungary at times last night, Giovanni Trapattoni says he is thinking of mixing it up.

The Italian has stuck with a fairly rigid 4-4-2 for the majority of his time in charge of Ireland, basing it around two deep-lying central midfielders, disciplined wingers and a pair of strikers.

However, presumably feeling that midfields of Croatia, Spain and Italy might be too much for Glenn Whelan and Keith Andrews to handle, Trap now claims he is toying with the idea of sacrificing one front man.

“To have a balance we have to give up one striker or put one more in midfield,” he said on RTE.ie. ”In the past I know this position. I know this line up.”

Would you agree? Do Ireland need to go 4-5-1? Is it a little late to be looking to change things?

  • More important us dropping the terribly out of form Doyle and replacing with Walters or Long.. Far more threat and will work just as hard!

  • Keane often plays very deep anyway. let him pick up some slack in midfield, run his socks off for 60-70mins and replace him with Long or Walters.

Start with 4-4-2. Can change to 4-5-1 as needs dictate. Adapting a more defensive formation will breed negativity into the lads IMO.

I am pretty sure Trap was speaking with Bilic in mind. The chances of him changing things up after so long are minimal. Keane will need to drop back as we often do when under the kosh. If he does indeed do a lot od dropping I can’t see him lasting more than an hour. Fear not though. We have so much attacking talent on the bench its unreal. To all the people saying we will be torn a new one I would point to our tournament record and indeed the fact we are very very very hard to score against

  • Walters and Keane should start with Walters playing inbetween the midfield and fowards. He plays there alot for Stoke. I can see that being a winning formula if needs be. Doyle could do the same job but I think Walters is more suited for it.

  • Get Paul Greene in there and we’re sorted! Simples. But in seriousness I do really wish Walters will get the start. His strength would be a massive addition. No team will fancy him bate’n into them Hon Ireland

    • Sure in last nights match Walters was very good at chesting down the ball, holding it up, making good runs. He’s stronger than Doyle and creates more chances. If only he could score more of them chances!

  • Christ, people trying to tell the man to change the way we play for the last 4 years and he’s considering it 5 days before the first game of the Euros? A bit late I’d say.

  • Makes no difference if he changes it or not. We will still be up against it.

  • Totally agree Paul, It would be totally ludicrous for Trap to change from the system that he has placed so much stock in for the last 4 years. I’m not the biggest advocate of this style but it would be foolish to change that in the first game of a major championship we’ve worked so hard to qualify for. I very much doubt that he will. I didnt think the man was capable of any form of change before Foleygate.
Last nights game showed that many of the nailed on starting 11 may not be completely worthy of their guaranteed place on the field. The only positives i can take from it were the strong performance from the bench, especially the powerful play and running from Walters, and the fact that James McLean remained on the bench(although i hope this doesnt mean that Hunt has become 1st reserve winger). With Slaven Bilic present and post-game announcing that he sees nothing new in Irelands play from the 4 games of ours he has been in attendance this campaign.
    Wait till sunday Slaven!

  • With Ireland being the rank outsiders at current bookie odds of over 80/1 to win i think even if he puts all 11 players in the goal they will still be beaten, dillusional rant tacticts of fans who think that they even have a whisker of a chance of getting out of this group are pitiful , save your hard end cash and stay at home and watch with agony on a 60″ tv screen and get a pallet of beers in , happy days

So glad the likes of you wont be in Poland. Anti-craic himself. King misery guts. We are a good side and will prove our worth. I bet you will change your tune and jump on board if we get a result against the Croats.

    • Would you ever jog on with your negativity. Ireland have just as a good a chance as any of the other three. We’ve lost 2 games under Trap, one unfairly. Spain are overrated, they barely managed a 89th min winner against China at the weekend, the 66th best team in the world. We can get out of this group. COME ON IRELAND!
