GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI GAVE a strong indication of the players who will represent Ireland at Euro 2012 when he named his squad for the upcoming friendly against the Czech Republic this morning.
Sunderland winger James McClean is the headline omission, with Anthony Pilkington, Wes Hoolahan, Anthony Stokes, Ciaran Clarke and many other hopefuls also overlooked by the Italian.
Trapattoni has never made any secret of his loyalty, and said last month that the players who earned Ireland’s qualification for a first major tournament in 10 years deserve to travel to Poland and Ukraine this summer.
But with three warm-up friendlies lined up between now and then, many expected Trapattoni to experiment a little and try out some new faces before settling on his final selection.
What do you think? Was Trapattoni right to show faith in his “tried and trusted” players? Or is this squad an opportunity missed?
