Poll: Is diving in football ever justified?

With an increasing amount of people indicating that the practice is legitamate, you can let us know whether or not you agree with them.

WITH NEWS THAT Paolo Di Canio has suggested diving in football is legitimate, the old debate is set to rage once more.

Given that Di Canio is not the first football person to indicate that diving is an acceptable part of modern-day football, we thought we’d ask you whether the practice is no longer taboo.

After all, in modern football, millions of euro, not to mention people’s jobs and livelihoods are at stake.

People may argue that football is no longer only a game and that the issue of fair play cannot be viewed in such black and white terms.

Then again, with millions of youngsters tuning in every week, there is reason to suggest that players who deliberately deceive the referee are setting a bad example.

Moreover, it could be argued that cheating in any form, irrespective of what’s at stake, is wrong.

Regardless, with FIFA failing to do much to stamp out the problem, and mangers such as Di Canio condoning this behaviour, it looks as if the issue will remain a factor in modern football for the foreseeable future.

So what do you think, is diving acceptable?

Poll Results:

No, it's blatant cheating and cannot ever be condoned. (107)
Only when a player needs to show that he's being fouled. (40)
Yes, when jobs and big money are at stake, it's understandable. (7)

No definitely not. It ruins the game. If you allow it then everyone will do it all the time and the game will turn into a farce.
What soccer needs is TMOs to review all contentious issues like awarding of penos, cards etc. Start slapping the divers with hefty bans and you’ll change things.

Diving is cheating, trying to gain an unfair advantage. No other sport condones cheating. Look at. if Ireland v Italy rugby match, the Italian guy has received a 15 week ban for eye gouging which was picked up on camera and he was cited after the game. If diving is picked up on camera why cannot FIFA cite the player in the same way.

I would generally agree with all of you, its disgusting, but after witnessing some the recent el Classicos with Mourinho at the helm for Madrid, Barcelona simply had no other option to counteract the heavy handed tactics imposed by the not so special one. Of course this is a rare case where one man is destoying the beautiful game and bringing it into disrepute all on his own!
