Poll: Do you have to like a sportsperson to cheer for them?

We can all acknowledge exceptional performances but do we only support those sportspeople we actually like?

AS WE’VE DISCOVERED on TheScore.ie over the past couple of days, Phil ‘the Power’ Taylor is a very divisive figure.

He is undoubtedly the greatest practitioner the world of darts has ever seen. Afterall, sixteen world championships speak for themselves. However, it’s also clear that many people don’t like him because of a perceived arrogance and aggression on the oche.

He’s not the only example of course, there are many who admire the achievements of Ronaldo, Tom Brady and Paul Galvin but could never cheer for them.

So today we’re asking – regardless of talent, do you have to like a sportsperson to cheer them on?

Poll Results:

No, I can acknowledge talent when I see it (118)
No, but only if they're on a team I support anyway (92)
Of course, personality is as important as ability (43)
