IT IS UNDERSTOOD that Merseyside police will investigate claims that a Liverpool fan made a racist gesture during their 2-1 win over Man United today.
Sky News’ Twitter account claims that the TV footage of the incident, in which a Liverpool fan appeared to mimic a monkey, was set to be investigated.
Tensions were already palpable, with some Liverpool supporters booing United full-back Patrice Evra, who has been involved in a well-documented racism-related argument with the club’s star striker, Luis Suarez.
Meanwhile, some United fans responded by taunting the club with chants relating to the Hillsborough disaster – a 1989 game in which Liverpool were involved that resulted in the deaths of 96 fans following a human crush that occurred in the stadium
In addition to the Suarez incident, the club also landed themselves in hot water recently, after one of their fans was alleged to have racially abused Oldham’s Tom Adeyemi, prompting the club to issue an apology to the player.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish chose to ignore the controversial behaviour from certain fans, saying:
“I think both sets of fans were a magnificent advert for their clubs.
“Both clubs can be very proud of the fans they have here. There was a good bit banter between both fans, which is brilliant because you don’t want to take that away.
“I think in the main they were fantastic and the players were a credit to that because none of them tried to do anything other than play football.”
In relation to the fans, Dalglish added that “I don’t think there was anything there that was untowards [during the game]”.
