ITALIAN POLICE HAVE raided the hotel where Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell is staying and confiscated a number of substances.
The former 100m world record holder tested positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrine at the Jamaican championships last month, along with compatriot Sherone Simpson.
Police raided the hotel where Powell and Simpson were staying on Monday, in Lignano Sabbiadoro in northeast Italy, seizing drugs and muscle supplements, although it has not been established if they are prohibited.
“We are examining the substances now,” Udine police captain Antonio Pisapia said on Monday.
No arrests have been made and nobody has been placed under investigation.”
Powell’s publicist has claimed it was not the 30-year-old’s room that was targeted but that of his trainer.
News of Powell’s positive test came on the same day it emerged American Tyson Gay, the fastest man in the world over 100m this year, also tested positive for oxilofrine.
Gay has been dropped by sponsor Adidas, who had supported him since 2005, and the 30-year-old has pulled out of next month’s world championships in Moscow.
