ST. PATRICK’S COLLEGE, Maghera have been denied back-to-back Hogan Cups after a strong second half showing from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne gave them the Masita GAA All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior A football title in Croke Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Derry school had led by as many as six points in the first half as they benefited from wayward shooting from a Kerry side who failed to trouble the scoreboard operators until the 20th minute when Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh pointed.
Just as in the Paddy Drummond Cup final earlier, the first score of the game was a goal as Maghera midfielder Conor Glass found the net in the 12th minute; Danny Tallon following it up with a point seconds later to give St. Pat’s a 1-1 to no score lead.
Tallan, Glass and Conor Convery were all to point again before half-time; Tomás Ó Sé replying for the Kerry school to make it 1-4 to 0-2 at the break.
However, Éamonn Fitzmaurice’s men were right back in it within two minutes of the restart, Ó Muircheartaigh’s second score preceded by a well-taken goal from Roibeárd Ó Sé.
Minutes later, a brilliant double save from Dáithí Ó Conchúir in the Pobalscoil goal denied both Convery and Cathal Mulholland when it looked like they were sure to score Maghera’s second maximum.
The Kerry side continued their second half dominance with three of the next four scores, Muircheartaigh’s third of the game giving them their first lead on 44 minutes.
It would take another ten minutes for St. Pat’s to draw level, Conor Cassidy with arguably the score of the game. However, their hard work was immediately undone when a soft-free allowed Ó Súilleabháin restore the Kerry school’s lead and they game was beyond St. Pat’s when Barra Ó Súilleabháin scored his first of the encounter seconds later.
