FORMER LIVERPOOL ASSISTANT manager Phil Thompson does not believe that Shane Long would be a good signing for Liverpool in the January transfer window.
The West Brom striker has been in superb form this season, scoring seven goals so far in all competitions, and has been linked with a move to Anfield to join up with his former manager at Reading, Brendan Rodgers.
However, Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson told Newstalk that he does not believe Long, or his international team-mate Kevin Doyle, has the requisite consistency to play alongside Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and company.
“Shane Long has had really good spells this year but I think he’s inconsistent as a goalscorer. That may sound daft, though, when he’s had such a purple patch,” he said.
One player that Thompson hopes Rodgers does make a move for is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Schalke striker who has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga club in January.
“I would like to think we are going to be in for Huntelaar. You look at the price he’ll cost, which is about £6m or £7m, and that would be within our framework. He has played with Luis Suarez before at Ajax too.
