Australia's Daily Telegraph has retired tomorrow's back page in memory of Phil Hughes

Irish cricket “stunned and saddened” by Hughes’ tragic death.

AUSTRALIA IS TODAY mourning the loss of one of its brightest young cricket stars, Phil Hughes, who died two days after he was hit in the head by a ball.

Cricket Ireland joined the international sporting community in remembering the 25-year-old.

“The entire cricket community in Ireland is stunned and saddened by the news of the tragic death of Phil Hughes at just 25 years of age,” President Joe Doherty said.

“The heartfelt condolences of all connected with Cricket Ireland go out today to Phil’s family, his wide circle of friends, and the entire Australian cricket family.”

Australia’s Daily Telegraph has produced this brilliantly simple yet poignant back page to honour Hughes’ memory:

RIP. What a tragedy, condolences to his family and friends. Have to feel for Sean Abbott here as well – such a freak thing to happen.

@ Ken Pepper, every sport is dangerous in its own way so why single out rugby or “rugger” as u put it?

Such a horrible tragedy, wrong place at the wrong time, just living his dream of representing his country. A stark reminder – if the GAA and it’s fans needed one – as to the importance of handling issues like the “Nash rule” without upmost respect and care. RIP.

@Anthony Ryan. Anthony, how did the ball get into the helmet (he was wearing one I believe) to do such tragic damage?

He was hit on his left side (his back foot) after totally rotating and opening up a bigger area with him stretching. If it was to hit his front foot it would have probably hit his shoulder or ear meaning the pads/helmet would have took the most of it

Some helmets provide cover for that area but are far more restrictive. Shocking tragedy, he was an absolute hero of a player destined for 10 further years at the pinnacle of the game. RIP
