Phew! The new Ferrari F1 car sure is ugly

It doesn’t matter what it looks like… as long as it’s quick, of course.

SINCE HEAVY SNOW forced the cancellation of Ferrari’s launch event of its 2012 Formula One car, images of the car were released online this morning.

All we have to say is shield your eyes.

After years of beautiful designs, the brand new Ferrari F2012 has taken a beating with the ugly stick. As we noted for the new Caterham CT01, regulations this year have forced teams to get creative with designs for the nose cone.

Looking past the face only a mother could love, the rear of the car actually looks quite a bit better. Taking a cue from last year’s McLaren MP4/26, the F2012 adds a secondary cooling duct above the airbox to aid cooling of the gearbox. The engine cover has a distinct sharkfin and the heavily sculpted sidepods make for a much tighter rear end.

Ferrari Team Principal Stefano Domenicali told Planet F1 that it does not matter what the car looks like, as long as it is very quick.

For his sake, we hope it is blindingly fast.
