THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY at the centre of a recent child sexual abuse scandal is โvery interestedโ in staging a major college football game in Ireland.
Athletics officials at Penn State University, one of Americaโs most famous football colleges, are looking at locations for once-off matches outside the US while they serve sanctions arising out of the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal.
Penn State coach Bill OโBrien said last week that a game in Ireland is high on the list of options while his team is banned from playing in end-of-season โbowlโ matchups.
In an email to TheScore.ie, associate athletics director Greg Myford confirmed that the Nittany Lions are looking at dates and opponents for an Irish trip in the near future.
โIn short, we are very interested,โ Myford wrote. โWe are exploring our options for dates and potential opponents to do so. Sooner rather than later is our hope.
But until we can bring the timing and potential opponent into focus a bit more clearly, any conversation would be highly speculative.
A spokesperson for the Big Ten, the athletic conference of which Penn State is a member, said that they โdefer to the institutions regarding the location of gamesโ when contacted for comment.
In the past, Ireland has staged major college games with great success. Most recently the visit last September of Notre Dame and Navy drew a sell-out crowd of over 48,000 fans, mostly from outside of Ireland, to Dublinโs Aviva Stadium. That game was worth an estimated โฌ60 million to the Irish economy.
But the sportโs governing body in this country, the Irish American Football Association, says Penn State may have trouble finding an opponent while it is serving sanctions.
The university was plunged into crisis in late 2011 following revelations that Sandusky, a former assistant football coach, molested boys on or near university facilities over a 15-year period. Sandusky, now 69, was convicted in June 2012 of 45 counts of sexual abuse and sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.
An independent report subsequently found that four university officials โ president Graham Spanier, vice-president Gary Schultz, athletic director Tim Curley and football head coach Joe Paterno โ had known about Sanduskyโs crimes as early as 1998 but failed to disclose them in a bid to protect the universityโs reputation. Spanier resigned, Schultz retired, Curley was placed on administrative leave and Paterno was fired after 46 seasons as head coach.
Following publication of the Freeh Report, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) handed down penalties including a $60 million fine and a four-year ban from participating in the end-of-season bowl games which runs until 2016. All of Penn Stateโs wins dating back to 1998 were also vacated, invalidating Paternoโs record as the NCAAโs โwinningestโ coach. Paterno died aged 85 in January 2012 following a battle with cancer.
In an statement provided to TheScore.ie, the IAFA said that they have not yet been approached regarding a potential visit by the Nittany Lions.
โWeโre aware that there have been some rumours circulating regarding the possibility of Penn State playing in Ireland, however, nobody has approached us to date.
โWe have checked via reliable sources within the sport and have been told that this speculation may be premature for two reasons โ firstly, it might be regarded in some quarters as circumventing Penn Stateโs NCAA sanctions and secondly that potential opponents may be reluctant to agree given the aforementioned and the reasons why Penn State received the sanctions in the first place.โ
A contract dispute between the IAFA and Navy following last Septemberโs Emerald Isle Classic is still ongoing but the Association said that it would not have any negative consequences on attempts to bring games to Ireland in the future.
โThe IAFA is and always has been supportive of any efforts to bring major games to Ireland. The Navy High Court case is still very much live, so we cannot comment on it. However, we are quite certain that it is not having an adverse impact on the ability of Ireland to attract overseas teams to events in Ireland.
โIndeed, the IAFA has attracted a significant programme of high-profile games involving overseas teams, including some North American teams, to Ireland for The Gathering โ details of which will be publicly announced shortly.โ

How about a game of rounders against them in Phoenix park ??
Surely this is the last thing a country trying to come to terms with sexual abuse on a wide scale actually needs.
???????????? Eh?
Its only a game of football
Let me elaborate, the sport didnt molest children and the players coming over shouldnt be subjected to sanction over the abuses of a former coach.
No need to patronise me. Whether you like it or not, the universityโs reputation was horribly tarnished. Why should Ireland help rehabilitate them?? Let them serve their punishment and then they can play a game here.
Apologies for coming across as patronising Brian. I cant agree with you on this though. I just dont think its right that a group of young innocent people should be punished for crimes committed against other young innocent people.
I agree with your argument to a certain extent but the authorities in the States have decided on this and we should take heed of that. Iโm genuinely sorry for those who are being punished for the horrible actions of a few but a decision has been made and it should be respected. I just think the publicity would be really bad for the country and itโs something we could do without.
Brian, should we turn off Corrie too?
more then welcome penn state. there was a great vibe in dublin with Navy vs notredame.
Forget about this American Football rubbish. Get a NBA game over here for some proper entertainment from a sport in America.
That basketball rubbish is nearly as bad as Gaelic football. Way too much pushing and pulling for my liking. American football is a proper sport played by athletes.
Hahaha proper sport played by athletes. Hahaha http://medicmagic.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/big-american-football-players.jpg
To be fair, I guarentee that those boys are faster fitter and stronger than any front row in rugby you care to mention. Their Pre season fitness tests are on YouTube, itโs torture
Were you dropped from your local Gaelic team Rodrigo? You sound very bitter!
Itโd be great to get another college football game in Ireland. The ND v Navy game was great exposure for the country. Hopefully in Croke Park this time, thereโd be 30,000 more tickets than in Lansdowne road.
Iโd rather watch paint drying than be subjected to all them add breaks.
You are aware that you have free choice
Iโd love to see an NBA or college basketball game over here! Went to see a Knicks game over in NYC once it was awesome. Iโd still love to go to a football game though, I was raging I missed out on the Notre Dame/ Navy game.
As long as โGraham Spanier, vice-president Gary Schultz, athletic director Tim Curley and football head coach Joe Paternoโ who covered up his actions have also been removed I would have no problem with them coming over here to play. If theyโre still involved in the university I would rather they were not invited over here to play a game as a mark of respect for the children and their families who suffered because of their inaction.
Everyone you listed is either suspended, fired or in the case of joe paterno is dead
Circumventings bans? Following the letter of a ban and ignoring the spirit? In Ireland?
They are not prevented from playing games and they still do play games.
They just cannot compete in the โBowlโ Championship post-season games.
Just as well. The Irish people wouldnโt stand for such a lack of sportsmanship.
Iโm sure we could field a team if priests against themโฆ.that could make an interesting match up!
Any other team but not this one right now under these circumstances.
Should we ban swimming in Ireland because 1 coach was a paedophile?
I never said ban. But we should respect the victims. Perhaps ban the catholic church though as most appear corrupt.
saturday 20th september 2014.. penn state and notre dame both have a game yet to be fixed .lets get them together and over to dublin .Have to be croke park..70000 plus id say ,the americans will travel in tens of 1000s for this one #letsgoirish
Any concerns about Penn State not being able to find an opponent or that a game in Ireland would be circumventing sanctions are absolutely and entirely unfounded.
Can we get the lingerie bowl over too?
Get them to play the Leitrim team in Gaelic-American Compromise Rules!
Reading the article, its hard not to come away thinking that the people in charge thought to themselves โNow where on earth can we relocate to where child abuse is less of an issueโ
Thatโs nonsense.
All the people implicated are no longer involved with the team.
The team carries on and did not commit any crimes so why punish them for the actions of previous administrators?
I know that. Read my comment again.
Ah Wisconsin would be much more fun. Go Badgers!
Maybe some of the Irish teams could get their best guys together & put out an all Ireland team to go against them.
Get it pencilled in for the 4th July.
We had an Irish National team a few years ago that played American teams but the difference in standard is so vast.. It would be great to mix it up with the big boys but Division 3 NCAA teams have come over here and hammered Irish teams!
Its all about the quan
They would certainly feel at home here given our long standing connivance of child rape, we have so much in common
