PAUL SCHOLES EXPECTS to be shown the Old Trafford door by new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.
The legendary midfielder, who returned as part of interim manager Ryan Giggs’ coaching staff, insisted: “I’m not waiting for a phonecall.”
Van Gaal has kept on Giggs as his number two but the Dutchman’s appointment could spell the end for Scholes and ‘Class of 92′ team-mates Nicky Butt and Phil Neville.
“I’ve not spoken to Edward Woodward,” Scholes wrote in his Paddy Power blog.
I came back for Ryan Giggs for the last few games to try to help out but I’m not waiting for a phonecall and don’t expect to be at Old Trafford next season.
Scholes singled out Bayern Munich’s £20 million midfielder Toni Kroos as United’s top transfer target but admitted that they will need “five or six to get anywhere near the top of the Premier League again.”
After the ill-fated David Moyes experiment and last season’s disastrous seventh-place finish, he believes van Gaal is the man to lead the club back to the top.
But he had a pop at Woodward, saying that United’s chief executive “has an awful lot to prove this time that he’s good enough at his job.”
He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants. It’s obvious that last year he didn’t manage to do that. If he doesn’t, we are not going to get anywhere near the top.
He added: “Louis van Gaal has the credentials. He’s been at the biggest clubs in the world but he has a major job on his hands at Man United.
“It’s a massive task and there’s a big gap to fill to catch Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool next season.
“United are a long way behind. If van Gaal gets them to the Champions League, it’ll be a start.”
