Cork hurlers hopeful captain Patrick Cronin will be fit after bout of pneumonia

The Rebels player was hospitalised after a club game on Sunday.

THE CORK HURLING management are hopeful that captain Patrick Cronin will be fit for their Munster hurling semi-final against Clare as he recovers from a bout of pneumonia.

Cronin was suffering from the illness last week and was forced off on Sunday afternoon during a local championship game with his club Bishopstown.

The 26 year-old was forced off during half-time of that club game where last year’s Cork senior hurling finalists Bishopstown defeated Courcey Rovers in the first round of this year’s Cork senior hurling championship.

The decision was taken to make the substitution due to medical advice as Cronin was coughing up blood and he subsequently spent a night in hospital.

But Cork selector Kieran Kingston, speaking last night after their 3-15 to 0-22 defeat in a challenge match against Galway in Mallow, is optimistic that Cronin will be fit for the clash against the Banner on June 23rd.

“We only found today that he was kept in over night with a chest infection,” Kingston told Cork’s Red FM.

“We really won’t know more until during the week but we’d be hopeful that he will. Once he gets through a course of antibiotics, we’ll give him a bit of a rest for the next week or ten days.

“We have nearly three weeks and Pa was at a high level of fitness before he got this. While it will take a bit out of him, once he gets through the medication, we’ll give him plenty time.”

And judging by this picture tweeted by clubmate and Cork senior footballer Ken O’Halloran, Cronin is on the road to recovery.
