Ice ice baby? Keane in frame for Iceland post

The ex-Ipswich boss has also been replaced by his namesake Robbie at the top of a list of Ireland’s most bankable soccer stars.

ROY KEANE IS believed to be the leading contender for the soon-to-be-vacant Iceland manager’s job.

The Daily Mail reports that the ex-Sunderland boss is among the candidates who are vying for the position, along with Steve Coppell and Lars Lagerback.

Their current boss, Olafur Johannesson, is due to leave his post at the end of the month, and it is understood that Keane will watch the team’s game with Cyprus tomorrow, having already held talks with the Icelandic FA.

The Corkonian has previously had spells managing Sunderland and Ipswich, both of which ultimately ended in failure, and he has been out of a job since leaving the latter club in January.

“We can’t confirm or deny if Roy Keane is in contention for the job and there will be no further comment,” the Icelandic FA told RTE.

Meanwhile, The Sunday Times reports that Keane has been replaced by his namesake Robbie as Ireland’s most bankable soccer star, according to a survey conducted by Onside Sponsorship.

Robbie came second only to Brian O’Driscoll in the survey, as a result of greater recognition among women.

Roy Keane in the land of fire and ice. Seems appropriate in a sense. Hope he gets the job as it’s always nice to see an Irish person progressing in their career no matter whether you like them or not.

I agree that he has enjoyed some success as a manager, but I think even Roy would admit that he ultimately failed at Ipswich and Sunderland, given that he left both jobs prematurely.

i think he gives his reason for leaving sunderland as the change of ownership as he didnt like Ellis Short but Ipswich was never a good fit. He failed in that he didnt take the club to a higher level but he was successful in not making them any worse than they are.
I think he has potential to be a very good manager somewhere, he just has a slight naivety with signing old mates that he used to play with.

Great player, could be a very good manager if he can handle players properly. All the fire and passion will only get you so far, as we saw with his time in Sunderland. The “Keane Factor” lustre wore off reasonably quickly and the cracks showed all over the club. Tactically i’m not too sure about him so I won’t comment but he does have an eye for a player..
