Paralympics 2012: Brown and Shaw make bronze medal ride off, Keane reaches 100m final

Eilish Byrne also put in an encouraging display earlier today.

THERE WAS SOME good news this morning for Team Ireland, with Ellen Keane securing a PB to qualify for tonightโ€™s Womenโ€™s 100m Butterfly S9 final, which takes place at 7.30pm.

Following her achievement, Keane said:

โ€œI had a really good fly set yesterday, it put me in a positive mood and positive frame of mind, I just wanted to get out there and get used to racing and it felt really good, hopefully tonight I can get another PBโ€.

Elsewhere, James Brown and Damien Shaw qualified for the Bronze medal ride off in the Individual Pursuit B paracycling competition at the Velodrome.

The duo recorded a time of 4:25.557, meaning they were the fourth fastest qualifiers, and are set to face Spanish pair Miguel Angel Clemente Solano and Diego Javier Munoz at 4.57pm.

However, James Scully missed out on qualifying for tonightโ€™s 50m Freestyle S5 final, as he was ninth fastest in this morningโ€™s heats, with a time of 38.18 seconds.

Scully at least has the compensation of the 200m Freestyle event to look forward to on Saturday.

โ€œIโ€™ve got the first one over and done with, it felt good and Iโ€™m feeling fitter and stronger than ever before, Iโ€™ll get in and see what happens,โ€ he said.

Meanwhile, Eilish Byrne put in an encouraging display, and is currently in fourth place in the Equestrian Team Test โ€“ Grade II, with 21 of the 23 riders having performed.

Speaking afterwards, Byrne expressed satisfaction with her performance, saying:

โ€œI felt I dealt with this well. I tried to stay relaxed and dealt with the crowd really well. Overall I am quite pleased.โ€

Finally, Ronan Rooney lost his opening table tennis match in the Menโ€™s Singles M2 Preliminaries at the ExCel Arena.

Rooney was defeated by Beijing Gold medallist Vincent Boury from France. He is now set to face Slovakiaโ€™s Martin Ludrocsky at 6.40pm this evening.
